iPhone XS and XS Max accused of a new scandal: ChargeGate

For some odd reason, “-Gate” is an ending placed on the names given to every iPhone scandal where Apple’s smartphone doesn’t work as intended. We’ve covered BeautyGate, a flaw that smooths out skin flaws (such as bumps, pimples, zits, etc.) in camera photos. Now, the voice behind BeautyGate, Unbox Therapy‘s Lewis Hilsenteger, says that Apple might as well add “ChargeGate” to the list of scandals with the iPhone XS and XS Max.

The iPhone XS and XS Max are failing to charge for some when they connect it to their Lightning cable, Hilsenteger claims. Some are having to wake up the screen to get a charge. Others are disconnecting and then reconnecting the Lightning cable in order to receive a charge. Some are rebooting their iPhones to fix the issue, while others are having little to no luck charging their device(s). Hilsenteger demonstrated ChargeGate on his own iPhone XS and XS Max units while charging the iPhone X alongside them.

The extent of ChargeGate on the iPhone XS and XS Max

ChargeGate isn’t affecting everyone. This needs to be stated. It is only affecting some new iPhone buyers, so the problem isn’t as widespread as, say, BeautyGate (Apple’s software decisions affect all customers, not some). With that said, you may be one of the unfortunate victims — so the extent, whether wide or small, is little comfort when your iPhone refuses to charge.

Apple’s response to ChargeGate

iOS 12 to be focused more on quality but newer features may take time to arrive

Apple didn’t respond at first, but the fruit company has now said that it will address ChargeGate in iOS 12.1. IOS 12.1 brings the sexy bokeh blurring background effect to photos to give them a sophisticated style, but it will also address ChargeGate’s charging problems for some iPhone XS and XS Max customers.

ChargeGate is but one of a few iPhone XS issues

While ChargeGate is bad enough, the iPhone XS and XS Max have a few other issues as well. Among these are BeautyGate, as mentioned above, and what tech site Gizmodo calls AntennaGate 2.0. Reception issues, particularly with Verizon customers in the US, mimic what many remember from the first AntennaGate back in 2010 with the iPhone 4. While AntennaGate 2.0 isn’t getting the attention of ChargeGate, any problem with an expensive smartphone is bound to upset no small number of customers.

There is a bright side in all of this: those who have been so opposed to wireless charging could always give it a shot now. Who knows? They may just find ChargeGate to be enough of a problem to never use wired charging ever again. Though some have rebelled against wireless charging until now, it may prove to be a lifesaver in this situation.
