Nokia 6.1 Plus, Nokia 3 September Android Security Patch Rolled Out to Users in India; Here’s the Changelog

Keeping up with its track record of pushing out prompt software updates, HMD Global has started rolling out the September Android security update for the mid-range Nokia 6.1 Plus (review) and the budget handset Nokia 3  in some markets, including Kurdistan, Sri Lanka, and India.

Nokia 6.1 Plus, Nokia 3: OS Update

The latest update doesn’t come as a surprise as HMD is really consistent when it comes to sending out monthly security updates and OS updates for Nokia smartphones. In fact, all Nokia Android smartphone users can continue to expect OS updates for the next two years at least.

Coming to the latest update, it only brings the security patch and not other OS related improvements and optimizations. In India, the update is being rolled out to Nokia 3, which goes by the model number TA-1032, and the Nokia 6.1 Plus.

Nokia 6.1 Plus, Nokia 3: What’s New in Change Log

The Nokia Nokia 6.1 Plus update is around 71.8MB in size, while the Nokia 3 update is 84.8MB. The changelog doesn’t say a lot, apart from mentioning that it is the Google Security Patch for the month of September. However, the latest update addresses some key security issues. First of all, a security vulnerability in the Media framework has been taken care of. This was a critical issue as a remote controller could have launched an attack using a special file to run an arbitrary code while referencing a privileged process. The update will also address some other issues related to malware and prevent attackers from gaining access to permissions and bypassing operating system protections to interact with locally installed applications.

Nokia 6.1 Plus, Nokia 3: How to Install the Update

This is an OTA update, but because of its phased nature, you might not have received it yet. Owners of the two models can check for the latest update by going to Settings if the notification has not been received yet. Otherwise, you can wait for a download prompt. Since the update fixes a critical security issue, we recommend that users update as soon as possible to avoid running into problems.

Pitched at Rs. 15,999, the Nokia 6.1 Plus sports a 5.8-inch full-HD+ display and has a dual rear camera system (16MP+5MP) and a 16MP selfie shooter. The phone is fueled by the Snapdragon 636 processor and has 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of onboard storage which is expandable up to 400GB via a microSD card. The Rs. 8,000 Nokia 3 has a 5-inch HD display and is underpinned by a 1.3GHz quad-core MediaTek 6737 processor. It has 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal memory, which can be expanded up to 128GB with a microSD card.

Since the new update will make it difficult for hackers to exploit vulnerabilities and step up phone security, all users are encouraged to install the update right away.
