For the past few days, we have been talking about the imminent launch of Oppo’s new handset the Oppo K1 in India. We were, in fact, the first ones to decipher a cryptic teaser by Oppo on Flipkart and report in our January 29 article that the new handset teased on a new landing page was the Oppo K1. Just yesterday, we posted another article in which we hinted at the possibility of the Oppo K1 being officially launched in the first week of February 2019. Today, we have confirmation from Flipkart and Oppo themselves that the Oppo K1 would be on sale starting February 6, 2019. The old teaser page where Oppo did not mention the model of this soon-to-be-launched phone now clearly states that this handset is the Oppo K1. The page now also says that the Oppo K1 will be officially revealed on February 6 at noon. It is still unclear if the handset would go on sale on the same day.
Let us now talk about the Oppo K1 in detail.
Oppo K1: Is this an entirely new series for India?
Currently, Oppo was known to mostly sell its A-Series, F-Series, and R-Series handsets in India. Last year, they also came up with Realme, a new sub-brand that has managed to take the market by storm. With the new K series devices, Oppo seems to be targeting the affordable mid-range segment in India. The Oppo K1, as you might have guessed by now, is a mid-range device with a decent spec sheet. The one feature that will make it stand out from the crowd, however, is that it is most likely going to end up as the most affordable smartphone with an in-display fingerprint scanner here in India. Let us now delve into the specifications of the Oppo K1.
Oppo K1: Specifications, features, price in India
In case you weren’t aware, the Oppo K1 isn’t an entirely new device. The phone was on sale in Oppo’s home market of China since October 2018. We had, in fact, even covered that launch here on MySmartPrice. As of now, what we know is that the Oppo K1 will come with a large 6.4-inch panel. This is a notched display and is likely to be of the AMOLED type. This panel has a resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels in the 19.5:9 aspect ratio.
Powering the Oppo K1 is the powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 SoC that features an octa-core CPU. The graphics are handled by the Adreno 512 GPU. We still do not know if the Oppo K1 will be offered in multiple RAM and storage options like it is in China. In its home country, the Oppo K1 comes in a base 4GB RAM + 64GB version and a pricier 6GB RAM +64GB version. The Chinese version of the K1 reportedly does not get a microSD card slot. It remains to be seen if the Indian variant also skips this feature. The Oppo K1 gets a fairly large 3,600 mAh battery and like almost all other handsets in its price segment, would support dual SIM cards as well as VoLTE networks.
Moving on to the imaging department, it is likely that the Oppo K1 would get a 16-megapixel primary camera mated to a 2-megapixel dept sensor. The front-facing camera on the Oppo K1 is a 25-megapixel shooter. Both the front and rear cameras will come with AI capabilities for image enhancement. At launch, the Oppo K1 will run Oppo’s own Color OS 5.2 atop an Android 8.1 Oreo core. It is possible that the phone would be updated to Android 9 Pie and Color OS 6 in a few months after its launch.
It is also currently being rumored that the Oppo K1 would be launched under the important sub INR 20,000 mark in India.
