Nokia 9.1 PureView with Snapdragon 855 SoC, 5G Support to Launch by Q4, 2019: Report

It was earlier this year on the eve of MWC 2019 that HMD Global announced Nokia’s current flagship handset – the Nokia 9 PureView. Armed with a penta-lens setup at the rear, and exquisite design cues, the Nokia 9 did try to make a statement. The handset, however, had one major issue. In spite of it being a flagship-class handset (and near flagship-grade price), the phone used the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset from last year. This, at a time when all other flagship handsets had started switching to the newer Snapdragon 855 chipset meant that buyers weren’t too keen to dole out a good amount of money on hardware that was one generation old. Nokia, it seems, is on a mission to fix that issue by launching a successor to the Nokia 9. The company is reportedly working on a new device called the Nokia 9.1 PureView before the end of the year. While this was a fact that many of us already knew, if we are to believe a report by our friends over at NokiaPowerUser, there have been some developments in this regard since then.

Nokia 9.1 PureView: What we know so far

There was a consensus among tech journalists and Nokia fans that the company was aiming to launch the Nokia 9.1 by the end of Q3, 2019. Nokia, however, seems to have run into some issues with the device, which essentially means that the launch of the Nokia 9.1, as of now, stands delayed. According to NokiaPowerUser, the testing and feedback team at HMD Global have reported several issues about the upcoming handset. This has resulted in the company making sure that all these issues are ironed out before a commercial launch happens. HMD Global, it seems, wants to make sure that they fix all the major issues with the phone before it goes on sale to avoid any bad press. As things stand now, there is a good chance that we might see the launch of the Nokia 9.1 happen sometime in Q4.

Nokia 9.1 PureView: Expected specifications

The major upgrade that the Nokia 9.1 will get over its predecessor is that it will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset. With this chip, the handset is also expected to receive support for 5G networks. The company is also expected to improve the camera performance of the device significantly and will focus on video and enhanced low light performance. The faster processor and an improved software algorithm for the camera will mean that the overall camera app and the app-opening time will also see an improvement. While we do not know about the design and other features, there is a talk about the possibility of the Nokia 9.1 PureView getting a punch-hole display. The phone is expected to run Android Q out of the box with almost zero customizations.
