Sony PS5 State of Play event date leaked: What to expect

The PS5 is slated to launch towards the end of 2020 and Sony has done a decent job of surprising fans with information about the console. The company took to a blog post to show off the DualSense controller before it could be leaked. At an event in June, Sony also showed off the PS5 and PS5 all-digital edition before it could be leaked as the console was expected to enter production. However, a lot of information like the date of Sony’s events has leaked online multiple times and has generally been on point. However, we do suggest you take the following information with a grain of salt.

According to Jeff Grubb’s Summer Game Mess, it looks like Sony will hold a PS5 state of Play in August 2020. He doesn’t mention a date but information circulating the internet suggests that it could be between the 5th and 11th of August.  There is no information on what could be showcased at the event but speculations are high for rumoured games like Silent Hill remake and many more that are yet to be announced.

There is a lot we do not know about the console including the UI, where is the expansion slot, the ports at the back of the console and most importantly, a price and launch date. Getting all the above information at one go may be asking for too much as Sony and Microsoft are both waiting for the other to reveal the price first. Microsoft is also expected to hold an Xbox Showcase in August.

We did get some hints of the PS5 UI during the June showcase, but nothing that gives us any details. Both Sony and Microsoft have shown us what the next-gen consoles look like and you can check out our comparison of the 2 consoles here. You can also check our comparison of the specifications of the PS5 and Xbox Series X here.

Netflix will let users speed up or slow down playback on Android smartphones

It looks like Netflix customers will be able to control the playback speed of the content they watch. According to The Verge, “Netflix will allow anyone on an Android mobile device to stream at either 0.5x or 0.75x speeds for slowed-down viewing and 1.25x or 1.5x speeds for faster watching”. For those that consume content at a fast speed on YouTube will be familiar with these playback options. It looks like Netflix is testing the feature on the web browsers and iOS but there is no information on whether this will come to the Smart TV platform or to streaming devices like the Fire TV stick or Mi Box.

Playing content faster or slower isn’t something new and the feature has been available on YouTube for some time now. The options on YouTube to control playback speed are more than what Netflix is offering. If you are binge-watching a show, there are times when you want to watch a certain section faster just to run through it without actually skipping 10 seconds ahead in case you miss something and the ability to control the playback speed will help with this.

“We’ve also been mindful of the concerns of some creators,” a spokesperson told The Verge. “It’s why we have capped the range of playback speeds and require members to vary the speed each time they watch something new — versus fixing their settings based on the last speed they used.”

If you are someone that is looking to subscribe to Netflix, we caution you to be careful as a new Netflix phishing scam has come into light that attempts to steal your personal and credit card information. Moreover, the phishing email is able to bypass mail security measures in place to block such scams in the first place. You can read more about it here.

In other Netflix news, it looks like the streaming service is currently testing a new Mobile+ plan in India priced at Rs 349 monthly that offers HD streaming for phone, tablet or PC. It does not include streaming on TV and follows the basic mobile plan which costs Rs 199. You can read more about it here.

If you would like to take a break from Netflix, know that you can pause your subscription for 10 months. You can read all the details here.

Sony launches worlds widest zoom lens with an f28 aperture

Sony has announced the brand new FE 12-24mm f/2.8 GM lens for its mirrorless lineup. This is a lens that’s a part of the G Master series of lenses from Sony for its full-frame mirrorless cameras, although it is also compatible with its APS-C portfolio. However, what’s special about the lens is that it’s the world’s widest full-frame lens with a fixed aperture of f/2.8.

The Sony FE 12-24mm f/2.8 is a fairly large and heavy lens, tipping the scale at 874 grams, measuring 5.39 inches in length and 3.84 inches in diameter. This large size of the lens is due to the complex optical configuration, which includes three XA Extreme Aspherical elements, two super extra-low dispersion (ED) elements as well as a single aspherical lens element. The aspherical and XA elements serve the purpose of controlling fringing and chromatic aberration on ultra-wide lenses, aspherical elements do the same when these ultra-wide lenses also have a large aperture. The aperture assembly utilizes 9 blades, giving the bokeh a circular characteristic. The lens construction also offers a dedicated focus hold button, while also incorporating dust and weather sealing. The lens does not include a filter thread at the front.

Sony launches world's widest zoom lens with an f/2.8 aperture

Up until now, a major breakthrough in lens design has been fairly slow. For decades, the lenses on offer have had standard focal lengths, paired with a standard aperture. For example, it was understood that zoom lenses would not have an aperture larger than f/2.8, since it would make the lens too bulky and expensive to market. However, Sigma broke through that decade-old chokehold when the company announced the 24-35mm f/2.0 lens. This was the world’s first zoom lens with an f/2.0 aperture, signalling that the first party lens-makers had enjoyed their comfort zone long enough. Prior to this, the only major lens redesign we saw was with the introduction of higher resolution DSLRs (30MP+) as the lenses available at the time did not have the resolution to match the sensors, introducing diffraction artefact into images that had been shot at f/8 or smaller. OIS was another area where we saw slow and steady improvement, with Canon and Nikon lenses going from 3-stops of effective OIS to 4 and now, even more. However, Sigma was the first to break the barrier of optical design challenge within the realm of what was considered a fair asking price. Since then, Sony and Canon have stepped up their game significantly.

With Canon finally foraying into the professional mirrorless space with the EOS R lineup, the new RF lenses have been nothing short of an engineering marvel themselves. While they were quick to bring their popular EF lenses to the RF portfolio, such as the 85mm f/1.2L, the 50mm f/1.2L and even the 24-70/24-105 combos, the real engineering marvel was the 24-70mm f/2.0L USM. While Sigma’s lens offered a relatively small zoom range, Canon’s covers a very popular focal length, while offering a larger aperture. Nikon, for its part, redesigned their Noct lens for the modern high-resolution sensor, releasing the Nikkor Z Noct 58mm f/0.95 for its Nikon Z series of mirrorless cameras.

Ultra-wide zoom lenses for well over a decade have been stuck at the 16mm end if the lens had to be a full-frame lens and also pack an f/2.8 aperture. There are prime lenses available with an aperture of f/2.8 that are much wider, and even APS-C lenses that advertise a focal length as wide as 11mm with an aperture of f/2.8. However, the latter does not cover the entire area of a full-frame sensor and when attached to an APC-S body, offers only a cropped focal length. Basically, you’re not really getting the 11mm FOV. The new Sony FE 12-24mm f/2.8 finally brings everything together; full-frame compatibility, a large aperture and a 12mm wide-end.

Sadly, this kind of feat does not come cheap. The Sony FE 12-24mm f/2.8 has a price tag of Rs 2,99,990 and is available across all Sony Center, Alpha Flagship stores, Sony authorized dealers and major electronic stores.

Mi TV users can watch movies under the Disney+ Hotstar Multiplex banner 2 hours before everyone else

Xiaomi Mi TV users, there is good news for you. The company has announced that if you are a Xiaomi TV user and are subscribed to Disney+ Hotstar, then you will get access to movies released under Disney+ Hotstar’s Multiplex banner 2 hours before the rest of the world. So if there is a movie releasing on the platform that you are looking forward to and you have a Xiaomi TV, you can enjoy it 2 hours before the rest of the world.

Commenting on the integration, Mr Eshwar Nilakantan, Category Lead, Mi TVs said,” With consumers at the centre of everything that we do at Xiaomi, we are focused on providing truly innovative customer experience with the best specs and software which is seen consistently across all our Mi TV variants. Understanding the needs of the Indian consumers in these post-COVID times, we are taking our partnership with Disney+Hotstar ahead and providing film-lovers with an additional privilege of experiencing the premiere of some of the biggest Bollywood movies, two hours ahead of the official release. Through this first of a kind industry integration, we are confident that Mi Fans and consumers across the country will be able to enjoy watching the first day, ‘first show’ of some of the most multi-talented actors of the Indian film industry.”

What is Disney+ Hotstar Multiplex?

Well, just like Friday movies released in theatres and Friday night premieres on good old cable TV, Disney+ Hotstar Multiplex is the platform’s version of premiering a movie on Friday nights at 7:30 PM. Even though you can watch the movie after its release on the platform at your convenience, the logic of the 7:30 premier is to make it a family experience of sitting down and watching a movie. The advantage of the Xiaomi partnership is that viewers can enjoy the movie 2 hours before the rest of the world - at 5:30 PM

Xiaomi’s MI TVs run on Android TV and also give users access to Xiaomi’s own UI called PatchWall. According to Xiaomi, “PatchWall 3.0 with its Deep Integration with 23+ Content Partners brings together content from both local and global and across 16+ languages, resulting in one of the largest libraries of Video-On-Demand providers.  With its unique Universal Search feature, users can search content from over 23+ content partner apps, hassle-free. It also allows users to safeguard content that is not suitable for Kids, with Kids Mode. Kids Mode allows you to view and browse content meant for your kids across all platforms with ease”.

What to expect from the Jio Phone 5?

There's not a lot of information about the rumoured Jio Phone as of now, but it's safe to expect that it will support 4G and will come with apps like Facebook and WhatsApp preloaded, as they're present on the older generation phones as well. The presence of these two apps also indicates that it will run on KaiOS, similar to its predecessors.

It is also speculated to be priced lesser than the first iteration of the Jio Phone at around Rs 399. Hence, the name Jio Phone Lite has been making more sense.

With Jio Phone 5, the company will be targeting to tap the rural and tier 3 markets where people primarily need a calling device without spending a lot. Jio Phone has been a hit. Within a year of its release, JioPhone commanded almost half of the feature phones market. In the second quarter of 2017, Jio was able to capture a 0.3% market share, which increased to 47% market share, within a year, which converts to a whopping 6-digit growth percentage.

There's more coming from Jio and Google

Reliance Jio recently revealed Google's Rs 33,737 crore investment in Jio Platforms, the company's digital arm for a 7.73% stake. Both Google and Reliance are also collaborating to develop entry-level 4G / 5G affordable smartphones for India that run on an optimised version of Android and Play Store.

In his speech during this year's Reliance AGM, Mr Ambani said Jio is working towards upgrading 350 million feature phone users to an affordable 4G/5G smartphone, and its partnership with Google will help accelerate the migration of users from 2G feature phones to 4G smartphones.

Apple iPhone 12, new iPad launch likely delayed until October, indicates Qualcomm

Apple iPhone 12 launch is likely delayed until October as hinted by Qualcomm in its earning reports for the third quarter. Additionally, tipster Jon Prosser has revealed that the iPhone 12 and new iPads are expected to arrive sometime in October. This corroborates with multiple rumours about the delayed launch with Qualcomm stating that its Q4 earnings project a “partial impact” from the delayed launch of a “global 5G flagship phone”.

While Qualcomm did not reveal the name of the phone, it’s indicative of the upcoming iPhone 12 launch. Apple usually launches its new iPhones in September but due to the Coronavirus outbreak across the world, production lines have been impacted by slowed growth and companies have also met with lesser consumer demand. This could mean that the new iPhones with 5G support won’t launch until October as it would also mark the beginning of the fourth quarter.

Apple iPhone 12, new iPad launch likely delayed until October

Moreover, Akash Palkhiwala, Chief Financial Officer at Qualcomm told Reuters, “We're seeing a partial impact from the delay of a flagship phone launch. And so what we've seen is a slight delay that pushes some of the units out from the September quarter to the December quarter for us.” This delay in the launch could also be due to the deferred shipment of 5G chips from Qualcomm which were pushed to end-of-year.

This won’t be the first time Apple is delaying the availability of their new iPhones as was the case with iPhone X and iPhone XR, both of which went on sale in October after launching in September.

Apple iPhone 12 is rumoured to feature a 5.4-inch display with a smaller Face ID notch cutout on the front giving it a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. All the Apple is preparing to announcae this year will feature OLED screens and will be powered by A14 Bionic chipset with 5G support.

Previous leaks have also hinted that the new iPhones for 2020 will be priced aggressively, with the iPhone 12 starting at $649. The iPhone 12 Max is expected to be priced starting at $749 while the other two models, 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max are rumoured to come with triple camera setup along with a LiDAR sensor like the one on the recently launched iPad Pro. Both the phones are expected to feature a high 120Hz refresh rate as well. The iPhone 12 Pro could start from $999 while the larger 12 Pro Max is said to be priced at $1099.

Recently, Apple started a survey with a limited group of users about how they use their power adapters provided in-the-box amidst rumours that the company won’t be shipping a charging adapter with the iPhone 12. Apple is reportedly developing a 20W fast charging solution for the new iPhones and the adapter is rumoured to be sold separately.

With ban looming, PUBG Mobile updates its Privacy Policy for Indian users

PUBG Mobile recently updated its Privacy Policy specifically for India and Indian users. While it has not been explicitly stated, it is quite possible that the change in policy is to help avoid a ban in the country. The past month saw the Indian Government take a stand against Chinese apps like TikTok and ShareIt by banning 59 of them. However, one notable exception in that list was PUBG Mobile as popular battle royale game somehow managed to fly under the radar. However, reports suggest that the government is planning another wave of bannings and this time around, the game may not be so lucky. Which would explain the change in policy.

The most notable change in the policy seems to be in the ‘where do we process your information’ section. Here, the developers note that the game’s servers are located in India in the case of Indian users. Further adding that the game’s support, engineering and other teams are located in Tencent’s office in India in the case of Indian users will have access to player information.

PUBG Mobile updates its Privacy Policy for Indian users

The Privacy Policy now states, “Our servers are located in India (in the case of users located in India only), Singapore, Hong Kong SAR and the United States. In addition, our support, engineering, and other teams are located in our offices around the world (including the People’s Republic of China (“PRC”) (for the purpose of this privacy policy, this term excludes Taiwan, Hong Kong SAR and Macau SAR), India (in the case of users located in India only), the United States and Hong Kong SAR will have access to player information.”

It is still not yet known if the Indian Government will ban PUBG Mobile or not considering the game’s slightly confusing origins. However, if they do end up banning it, you may want to click here and check out some notable battle royale alternatives. If you’re looking for alternatives to the 59 apps that were initially banned, check this out.

OnePlus Nord users face display tinting issues, and its not surprising

Some early buyers of the OnePlus Nord are complaining of green, purple or yellow screen tints. As per 9to5Google, users on the official OnePlus forum and Reddit are reporting of these colour tints at low brightness levels.

As per the report, the early adopters of the Nord have been complaining about multiple display issues. One of the most common ones is the tinting. Nord users report when the display brightness dips below 25%, the darker portions of the display exhibit colour casts or coloured tinting towards the lower half.

In its statement to 9to5Google, OnePlus states, "under specific circumstances of low brightness, slight discolouration may occur due to the properties of the AMOLED display – this is characteristic of all OLED displays, and the degree of discolouration will vary depending on other properties of the display. This is not a quality issue and will not affect daily usage or the durability of the screen. OnePlus will continue to look into cutting-edge display technologies and strive to deliver the best user experience possible."

While it's true that it's a trait of OLED panels and can't be avoided, but it can also be possible that these users are facing a higher degree of tinting that is more prominent. But as of now, Nord users will have to live with it.

OnePlus Nord display issues: It's not the first time

The OnePlus Nord isn't the only handset from the company that is facing display issues. Quite recently, some OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro users also reported similar tinting issues that were later addressed through OTA update. The company confirmed that it's a hardware issue and a common one for AMOLED panels. But then there was another report of a black-crush problem, which is characterized by blocks of different shades of black when a pure black image is displayed on the screen.

OnePlus later issued an official statement on the OnePlus Reddit forums, confirming that the black crush issue is a hardware problem and cannot be fixed via a software update. The company is giving consumers three options if they face this issue on their devices; repair, refund or replacement.

OnePlus users are not alone; many other OEMs get to see complaints from their early users, but it's OnePlus has a consistency. Looking at the past, we can see flickering screen issue, battery issues, black bar issue, and others. OnePlus is usually quick at addressing these issues through its community forum but having such serious faults in newly released models is not something that can be ignored, especially when the company explicitly calls it a key feature.

We were at the OnePlus image lab in Taiwan last year, where the company's co-founder Carl Pei was gathering feedback on the OnePlus 7-series camera from a bunch of Indian journalists and reviewers including me. A fellow journalist asked Carl "what's the point of releasing a smartphone with tons of issues and fix it later?". He had a fair point. Why can't the company release the phone after a proper QA testing rather than handing over faulty devices to the early adopters? Don't forget these guys are the ones who had high expectations and pre-booked the handset without even knowing its price.

Having teething issues at launch is very common across OEMs, but faulty displays are not that common. I am not sure where the gap is in OnePlus' case, but it creates an image as if the company is either rushing the production and not spending resources on Quality Testing or both.

With OnePlus' re-entry into the sub 30K or $500 price segment with the OnePlus Nord, people now have an affordable option to own an OnePlus smartphone that promises to retain the user experience it is known for. In a price-sensitive yet huge market like India, phones like the OnePlus Nord manage to defy the norms. All of that is great, but a product should function as it is intended when it reaches the customer.
