A PS5 leak hints at interchangeable faceplates, making this the first customizable PlayStation ever

Sony has shown off the PS5 console in a grand reveal event but there are still a number of unanswered questions about the console. For starters, what are the ports at the back? Where is the M.2 slot for storage expansion? While PlayStation Lead Architect Mark Cerny has said we will get a teardown of the console before it launches, it is possible that one of Sony’s key aesthetic features for the PS5 has leaked online - customizable faceplates.

If information circulating the internet is to be believed, then the white plates on the PS5 can be snapped on and off. This means that you will be able to purchase additional plates aftermarket to customize the console to your liking. It also means that you will be able to replace the faceplates if they get damaged or dirty as a lot of people have been quite concerned about the durability of the “fins” of the console.

The question that comes to mind is whether both the faceplates will be changeable. It seems possible for the all-digital edition, but what about the one with the disc? If you look at the image of the PS5 with a disc drive it looks like the drive is beneath the white plate which means it is possible that the faceplate is changeable, but this is something we will only know when the feature is confirmed by Sony.

A PS5 leak hints at interchangeable faceplates

The information about the customizable faceplates comes from ResetEra which has posted images of a bunch of faceplates in what looks like the assembly process of the PS5. There is also one post with an A4 sized paper kept on top of the faceplate so a size comparison can be drawn as to how big the console is. Even though the internet has taken the size of a standard Blu-ray drive to judge how big the PS5 is, there is no concrete information on the dimensions of the console.

If you are interested in checking out the design of the PS5 and seeing how it compares with the Xbox Series X, you can do so here. You can also check out our comparison between the specifications of the 2 consoles here. We also had a chance to speak with the head of PlayStation India about the journey of the PS4 and you can read that here.

Both Sony and Microsoft are set to launch their consoles towards the end of 2020 in the global market. While Microsoft has expressed interest in a simultaneous global launch of the Xbox Series X, there is no information on when the console will come to India. Sony, on the other hand, has a page for the PS5 live on Amazon, Flipkart and its own portal in India and we can expect the console in India close to its global debut. You can read more about the listing page for the PS5 here.
