Facebook Messenger Gets Bio-metrics Lock Touch ID & Face ID

Facebook Messenger Gets Bio-metrics Lock Touch ID & Face ID

Facebook Messenger app’s new App Lock feature adds an extra layer of security. The feature effectively locks the app, and users will need to unlock it using their bio-metrics such as touch identification or face identification.

“Privacy is at the heart of Messenger – where you can be yourself with the people who matter most to you, whether that’s through a message, video chat, call or a Messenger Room,” said Jay Sullivan, Director of Product Management, Messenger Privacy and Safety.

Users should be able to apply Face ID or Fingerprint authentication to the device itself with this new functionality finding its way into the Messaging system.

This way, even if anyone picks up your unlocked phone, they won’t be able to go through your messenger messages, so to speak, an extra layer of security.

The functionality is available in India, but is only limited to users of the iOS and iPad. The update will be received by Android Facebook Messenger users over the next few months.

The App Lock functionality on the Messenger app is available in the Settings tab under the Privacy section. Notably, alerts are not limited by the new privacy feature, and users may need to configure this setting in the “Alerts & Sounds” section of the app.

Facebook said it’s also working on new controls to allow Messenger users to determine who can directly call or email them, who goes to their requests tab, and who can’t call or message them at all.

Facebook also states that it is working on Instagram-like inbox controls, and also calls for Facebook Messenger, which is expected to start testing early.
