Google Tensor SoC Will Be Made Samsung on 5nm Process, At Par With Apple and Qualcomm

Google, earlier this week, quietly unveiled the Pixel 6 series. The company ditched the “XL” moniker and launched the Pixel 6 Pro alongside the standard version. Both devices pack an all-new design and pack top-of-the-line internals. One of the highlights of the new Pixel phones is the Google Tensor chip. The custom chip developed by Google is claimed to offer a transformed experience for the camera, speech recognition and many other Pixel 6 features. Google did not deep dive into the details of the chip but some details around Tensor have floated on the web.

According to a report from WCCF Tech, Google Tensor is a 5nm chip that is being manufactured by Samsung. It is the same process used to mass-produce the current flagship processors like Snapdragon 888 SoC and the Exynos 2100 SoC. It suggests that while Tensor will be pretty powerful, it is also likely to be more power-efficient compared to the 7nm chip found on the Pixel 5 series. Of course, the real-world tests will decide how Google’s custom silicon fares against its Qualcomm and Samsung counterparts.

That being said, it is also said to be slower than the competitor’s top-of-the-line chips. It was previously rumoured that Google’s custom chip will be as powerful as the Snapdragon 870 chip, which again is more than capable to handle intense tasks. Details regarding the GPU remain unknown. It is speculated that Tensor could be paired with a Mali-G78 GPU, which is also found on Exynos 2100.

Google will bet big on its software customisation for the Pixel 6 series. The company has already claimed that users can experience a transformed experience for the camera, speech recognition and many other Pixel 6 features. Another major advantage over the competition is providing extended software support. It was previously rumoured that Google is likely to provide five years of software updates to its current Pixel flagships. The devices ship with Android 12 out of the box.

More details about the chip and the flagship phones will be announced later this year.
