Samsung has launched its new affordable version of a foldable phone, the Galaxy Z Flip 4. The new foldable phone was launched at the Unpacked 2022 event alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and the Galaxy Watch 5 series. Samsung has, more or less, fine-tuned the foldable experience on the Galaxy Z Flip 4. The phone, which comes as a successor to the Galaxy Z Flip 3, has some key improvements in the performance, battery and design departments.
Rest, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 shares some of the hardware with the Galaxy Z Flip 3. In case you are planning to make your purchase decision on whether you should consider buying the Galaxy Z Flip 4, here is a quick comparison with its outgoing model.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3: Design
The Galaxy Z Flip 4 gets some subtle changes on the outside. The frame is slightly flatter now to match the design language of the Galaxy S22 series. The sides are made of metal, whereas the outer shell of the Z Flip 4 and the Z Flip 3 are made of glass.
The bezels around the Z Flip 4’s foldable display are slightly slimmer than the outgoing Flip 3. The hinge that helps in the folding mechanism is also 1.2mm slimmer while being more sturdier.
While the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and the Galaxy Z Flip 3 are the same in terms of thickness, the former weighs about 4 grams heavier than the Flip 3 at 187 grams. Both phones, when folded, measure 17.1mm. In an unfolded state, they measure 6.9mm in terms of thickness.
The Galaxy Z Flip 4 comes in Bora Purple, Pink Gold, Blue and Graphite colours. The Flip 3 was launched in Phantom Black, Green, Lavender and Cream colours. The two devices continue to come with an IPX8 rating for water resistance up to 30 minutes.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3: Display
This is where both phones are the same but the Galaxy Z Flip 4 gets some fine-tuning and better features. Samsung claimed that the ultra-thin glass is now improved and the 6.7-inch foldable display is now up to 45 per cent more durable on the Flip 4. It has a Full HD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2x panel with a 22:9 aspect ratio. The screen also refreshes dynamically between 1Hz and 120Hz.
On the outside, the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and the Galaxy Z Flip 4 feature a 1.9-inch Super AMOLED display with the same 260 x 512-pixel resolution.
Both phones have a centrally aligned hole-punch cutout for the 10MP front camera with an f/2.4 aperture.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3: Performance
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 gets the latest 4nm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC, which has the potential to offer up to 3.19GHz of clock speed for intensive tasks. The octa-core processor is paired with an Adreno 730 GPU.
The Galaxy Z Flip 3, on the other hand, has a Snapdragon 888 SoC under the hood. Both phones come with 8GB of RAM as standard. The Z Flip 4 gets up to 512GB of internal storage, whereas the Z Flip 3 is capped at 256GB.
Software-wise, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 runs Android 12-based OneUI 4.1 out of the box and is assured to get four years of software updates and five years of security support. While the software support is the same for the Z Flip 3, it came with Android 11 out of the box. That being said, the Flip 3 has received an Android 12 update.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3: Cameras
Again, no changes here either in terms of hardware. The Galaxy Z Flip 4 and the Galaxy Z Flip 3 feature a 12MP dual-camera setup, which includes a 12MP main camera and a 12MP ultrawide camera. The phones also have the same 10MP selfie camera.
Samsung is introducing some new camera features in the Z Flip 4, such as Nightography for better low-light camera performance.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3: Battery
Possibly the biggest update in the Z Flip 4 compared to the Z Flip 3 is the battery size. The Z Flip 4 now packs a 3700 mAh battery, which could offer some good battery life, thanks to the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC’s up to 30 per cent power efficiency claim. The Galaxy Z Flip 3, on the other hand, packs a 3300 mAh battery.
The Galaxy Z Flip 4 charges faster with 25W wired fast charging and 15W wireless charging along with 4.5W reverse wireless charging. The Z Flip 3, on the other hand, charges at 15W with a cable and 10W wirelessly. It also supports 4.5W reverse wireless charging.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3: Verdict
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 comes with some minor, yet major upgrades. It now packs a bigger battery that charges faster and a powerful, flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon mobile SoC. The phone also gets some minor design tweaks. While the display size has not changed, the company further claims to provide a more durable and long-lasting foldable display on the Galaxy Z Flip 4.
The Flip phones share the same camera hardware. Your purchase decision could vary mostly on the design bit. If you want a curved frame, the Galaxy Z Flip 3 is the one to go. That being said, you would be compromising on the battery life and an extra year of software update. Not to forget, the performance and efficiency that the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 brings along.
