Devices like the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, Galaxy Tab S4, Nokia 6.1 Plus and Xperia XZ2 and several others have received yet another update, but unlike a software update, it is quite different. The aforementioned devices and several others now support Google ARCore, the company’s platform for pushing the boundaries of AR or augmented reality.
ARCore: Brings Support for Galaxy Note 9, Galaxy Tab S4, Nokia 6.1 Plus and More
While the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus (review) support ARCore, it does not necessarily mean that Galaxy Note 9 and Galaxy Tab S4 will be compatible with the AR solution as soon as they are removed from their boxes. This is because both Samsung and Google need to work tirelessly to ensure the tool is compatible with the upcoming flagships and in the case of the Galaxy S9 line, Google took nearly two months after its commercial release to activate the framework.
There are no specific software requirements for ARCore that have been outlined when it comes to Samsung and HMD’s Nokia-branded products, but Sony’s smartphones must be running Android 8.0 Oreo with the August security update or a later patch in order for the feature to be used. However, it should be noted that ARCore support is being bundled with the latest firmware package for the Xperia XZ2 family.
ARCore is presently available for a vast majority Android flagships, as well as a number of mid-rangers which is a very good thing because people on a tight budget will be able to experience the platform comfortably. What is ARCore?
ARCore is Google’s platform that is dedicated for building augmented reality experiences. Thanks to the use of different APIs, ARCore enables your iPhone, iPad or Android smartphone or tablet to sense its environment, understand the world and interact with information. ARCore’s motion tracking technology uses the phone’s camera to identify interesting points, called features, and tracks how those points move over time. With a combination of the movement of these points and readings from the phone’s inertial sensors, ARCore determines both the position and orientation of the phone as it moves through space.
