MediaTek M80 5G Modem With Support for mmWave and Sub-6 GHz 5G Networks Announced

MediaTek, last year, announced 7nm 5G SoC with Helio M70 modem, offering ARM Cortex-A77 CPU and Mali-G77 GPU. That one lacked mmWave support, and until now MediaTek didn’t have any other modem which could offer the same. Now, the company now takes a leap, as it is now out with the latest MediaTek M80 5G modem with support for mmWave, and sub-6 GHz 5G network.

MediaTek M80 5G Modem Specifications

The MediaTek M80 5G modem is the direct successor to the last year’s Helio M70 modem. The latter is available in Dimensity 1000 series of processors. Coming to the M80, it offers support for mmWave sub-6Hz 5G network standard. It also comes with a faster uplink speed of 3.76Gbps and downlink speed of 7.67Gbps. This is faster than the Helio M70’s 4.7Gbps and 2.5Gbps download and upload speed respectively. MediaTek mentions that the M80 even offers both non-standalone (NSA) and standalone (SA) architectures, dual 5G SIM connectivity, dual 5G NSA and SA, dual VoNR support, and Cat-19 LTE downlink capabilities.

The M80 also integrates the company’s “UltraSave technologies” which promises extensive power-saving enhancements. In addition to this, the M80 also has got Dynamic Bandwidth Part (BWP) technology which optimizes bandwidth use for heavy data throughput requests. Here’s a full list of radio access technologies that the M80 offers:

  • 3GPP Release 16 standard
  • Sub-6 GHz and mmWave dual connectivity and carrier aggregation
  • 5G NR (FR1) with carrier aggregation
  • 5G mmWave (FR2) up to 8CC
  • 5G carrier aggregation with Mixed Duplex (TDD + FDD)
  • Dynamic spectrum sharing (DSS) ready

In a press release, MediaTek mentions that this latest modem has been tested against industry standards and is expected to be sampled to customers later in 2021. Now that the company is out with a modem that supports mmWave and sub-6 GHz network standard, it should stay strong in the competition. In the US, carriers like Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T have already rolled out mmWave and sub-6 GHz networks. This is where MediaTek can take advantage of the same with this latest M80 modem.

Apart from the M80, MediaTek is even preparing for two more modems. It’s upcoming 5G portfolio includes the MediaTek T700, and T750 chipset, which is said to power 5G PCs set and 5G fixed wireless access routers (FWA) and mobile hotspot devices.
