IPL 2023 Format and Rules

The format for this year’s IPL will be the same as that of the previous year. We have 10 teams this year, which will be divided into two groups. Each team will play 14 league games, out of which seven will be played at their home ground and seven away. The team winning the match will be awarded 2 points, while the losing team will get no points. In case the match is a draw, both teams will get 1 point.

Once the league matches are over, four top teams will enter the Playoffs around. In this round, the following action will take place:

  • Qualifier 1: In this, the top 2 teams of the group stage will compete against each other.
  • Eliminator: The third and fourth top teams in the group will battle out in this group. The loser will be eliminated from the tournament.
  • Qualifier 2: The loser of Qualifier 1 and the winner of the Eliminator round will fight with each other to go to the Finals.
  • Final: The winner of Qualifier 1 and Qualifier 2 will compete against each other to win the IPL trophy.

Impact Player Rule

The IPL 2023 will also see a new rule known as Impact Player. As the name suggests, the Impact Player will be a substitute player that can take part in an IPL match. This new concept will allow teams to replace the player in the field in case he retires hurt or does not perform well in the condition. The Impact player can bat or ball.

Each team will need to announce four substitute players before the match begins, and one of the four can be called an Impact player. However, the rules also mention that the Impact should be an Indian player unless there are fewer than 4 overseas players in the Playing XI. Captain will have the authority to nominate the Impact Player. The player which has been replaced by the Impact Player can no longer participate in the remainder of the match.
