Last month, OnePlus shared the sub rosa details of the making of the mirror black variant of the OnePlus 6. And now the company has shared another interesting behind-the-scenes detail that involves the ‘waterdrop test’. OnePlus Product Manager Vito L., who was involved in designing of the mirror black OnePlus 6 has posted the waterdrop test story that has raised speculations regarding the rumored OnePlus 6T.

Could OnePlus 6T Feature a ‘Waterdrop’ Notch?
The strategically timed story of the waterdrop test hints towards a possible situation where the rumored OnePlus device gets a waterdrop notch. For the unaware, waterdrop notch is the new black in the world of smartphones. It made its entry with the launch of the Oppo F9 Pro. The mirror black OnePlus 6 designer shares the test story in a post that reads,
Here’s how it works: take a single drop of water and apply it to the back of the OnePlus 6 Mirror Black. Now take another drop of water and apply it to a non-absorbent surface (the surface of your desk, on a dinner plate, etc.). Notice the size of the waterdrop. Is it flat like a frisbee? Or does it bead like a marble? The difference, as Jade explained, comes down to the “wettability” of the surface
On an ideal surface, it looks something like this:
He further explains the significance of the test,
“Just close your eyes and run your fingers over the Mirror Black surface – the smoothness gives you that extra-premium hand feels, while the subtle curve and rigidity makes the phone easier to hold and more resilient to impact. Jade conducted the water test on over 100 Mirror Black prototypes before selecting the one you see today”.
Waterdrop Notch: The New Buzz Word
The waterdrop notch looks like a drop of water on the device. The newly introduced notch design is all the rage among smartphone users. Some of Oppo’s latest handsets including the Oppo F9, F9 Pro, and R17 come with this type of notch. Smartphone makers like Huawei and Vivo are also following the suit. The OnePlus 6T has not been confirmed officially but it has been circling the internet with rumored specifications and potential features. And the timing of the waterdrop test story adds further to the speculations regarding the device. If the expectations breathe life, OnePlus might draw designing inspiration from the waterdrop notch on Oppo R17.
OnePlus 6T: Expected Specifications
OnePlus 6T will feature a 6.4-inch AMOLED display with Full HD+ resolution. It will use the Snapdragon 845 processor, with up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. OnePlus is highly likely to release a 512GB storage variant at the time of launch or sometime later.
In the imaging department, you can expect a triple-camera setup at the rear, inspired by that on the R17 Pro, but with better specifications. The Oppo R17 Pro comes with a dual-aperture main sensor, which can also be found on the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus and the recently launched Note 9. OnePlus might use a similar sensor as well. You can also expect a battery with a slightly higher capacity along with the fast charging technology. The OnePlus 6T could feature the alleged Warp Charging, which is even faster-charging technology. On the software front, you can expect the smartphone to ship with Android 9.0 Pie with the new OxygenOS UI on top. The T-variant of the smartphones usually arrives 6 months after the release of the flagship device. We can expect the OnePlus 6T sometime in October this year. According to a recent report, the T-Mobile USA will start selling the OnePlus 6T in October with a price tag of $550. Let’s see if we get to see the device from OnePlus with the ‘waterdrop’ notch anytime soon.
