Samsung has announced the first certified products under the HDR10+ license program. Both Samsung and Panasonic have started rolling out a firmware update to their select 2018 TVs to enable HDR10+ support.
Samsung, Panasonic 2018 4K TVs Gain HDR10+ Support With Firmware Update
Samsung is rolling out HDR10+ support for the majority of its 2018 4K television lineup, including the QLED lineup. Similarly, Panasonic too is rolling out a firmware update for the vast majority of its 2018 4K TVs to add HDR10+ support. It should be noted that Samsung and Panasonic, along with 20th Century Fox, are the three main players behind the HDR10+ format. Just like HDR10, HDR10+ competes against the Dolby Vision HDR standard. While both standards offer more or less similar picture quality, content creators are required to pay a license fee in order to use the Dolby Vision standard. On the other hand, HDR10+ is a much cheaper alternative for content creators as they are required to pay only a nominal fee in order to use it.
Samsung TVs can now stream HDR10 Plus videos from Amazon Prime Video
As the name suggests, HDR10+ is basically an upgrade to the HDR10 format. HDR10+ adds dynamic metadata to each frame, which allows for a more true-to-life picture on compatible displays. The HDR10 format, on the other hand, comes with fixed metadata, which causes dark scenes to appear darker than what was intended by the creators. Only those devices that meet the high standards set for picture quality are provided the HDR10+ certification. Televisions are tested across various parameters like display mode, peak luminance level, peak luminance stability, transfer function, white point tracking performance, and color gamut coverage for the HDR10+ license program. According to HDR10+ Technologies LLC, more than 80 companies have applied or completed the license program so far. The application process is available to content companies, display manufacturers, Blu-ray disc players/recorders, set-top box manufacturers, as well as SoC vendors.
What About HDR10+ Content?
When it comes to content, Dolby Vision certainly has the upper hand currently. If you own a 2018 Samsung or Panasonic 4K TV with HDR10+ certification, you will be able to enjoy the Amazon Prime Video HDR library on your TV. Unfortunately, that is pretty much it. In the near future, however, a lot more HDR10+ content is expected to become available. 20th Century Fox and Warner Bros. have already confirmed that they are committed to releasing HDR10+ content for consumers. Starting later this year, both the studios are expected to release the first batch of HDR10+ Ultra HD Blu-ray discs. The HDR10+ Ultra HD Blu-ray discs will be compatible with all 4K HDR TVs, including those that support the HDR10 version. Needless to say, on TVs that don’t support the HDR10+ standard, you will simply see the HDR10 version of the movie.
As for playing those discs, the only Blu-ray players with HDR10+ support currently are available from Panasonic. Announced a few weeks back, Panasonic’s UB820 and UB420 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray players come powered by an HCX processor and support HDR10+ as well as the Dolby Vision format. By the end of the year, however, we expect to see HDR10+ compatible Blu-ray players from a few other brands to be launched as well.
