Honor Magic 2 Launch Set for Tomorrow: 6 Key Features of the Upcoming Smartphone, We Know So Far

After the fanfare of the flagship Huawei Mate 20 series has ebbed away and it has received glaring reviews, it’s time for the company’s sub-brand Honor to shine with its upcoming smartphone. So far, the unsightly notch is the band-aid solution of choice for increasing the screen estate but Vivo and OPPO have steered into another direction with a sliding mechanism. In the same vein, Honor’s upcoming Magic 2 smartphone is also going to have a pop-up camera. The phone is due to launch tomorrow and there is a lot more to it than the sliding camera mechanism. Here are the six highlights of the phone.

Catching Up With Sliding Camera Trend

The Honor Magic 2 has an Oppo Find X and Mi Mix 3 type slider mechanism on top of the front panel. The slider houses the front camera, sensors, and the speaker. The phone features a slim design and the slider seems to be integrated from the side. By the looks of it, the sliding mechanism will work manually, which means you will have to use your thumb to slide it out, pretty much like the mechanism we have seen on the recently launched Mi Mix 3 smartphone. The Honor Magic 2 has an iridescent mirror finish and two options will be available: a blue-to-light-blue and a pink-to-purple gradient. Needless to say, the phone looks stunning. It’s quite remarkable that Chinese OEMs have embraced the slider design and are now making changes to its functionality in terms of manual or automatic operation.

Powerful Kirin 980 Chipset

The Huawei built Kirin 980 chipset which currently only powers the flagship Huawei Mate 20 series phones will also fuel the Honor Magic 2. The 7nm chip is the first Cortex A76-based mobile CPU in the world. The chip also sports the Mali-G76 GPU, which promises significant improvement in gaming performance. The Kirin 980 SoC also has a dual neural processing unit which will spearhead its AI efforts. With a reported AnTuTu score of nearly 313,000 points, the Honor Magic 2 will be able to thrash competition easily. Moreover, Honor Magic 2 will support LTE Cat.21 and offer peak download rate of 1.4Gbps.

Six Cameras

The camera department of the Honor Magic 2 is also pretty impressive. The phone will have six cameras in total, three on the front, and three on the back. The front camera system will consist of a 16MP self-timer lens, and 2MP TOF lens for collecting depth information and implementing 3D face recognition. There will be two 16MP sensors and one 24MP lens on the back which will support super wide-angle shooting.

In-display, Voice, and Face Biometrics

The Honor Magic 2 will offer three ways to unlock the phone. In addition to having an in-display sensor and supporting support 3D face recognition, the phone will also offer voice unlocking. However, you will reportedly need an Honor branded headset to use the third option.

Enhanced Battery Life

The Honor Magic 2 will reportedly come with a 3500mAh grapheme based battery that will help with heat dissipation. Given that the Honor Magic 2 is expected to be about 8.3mm thick, it is remarkable that the company was able to fit in battery of such capacity. The phone will also support 40W fast-charging technology that the company is calling Magic Charge.

Getting Its Own User Interface

Usually, Honor branded smartphones use Huawei’s EMUI user interface, but the Honor Magic 2 will get its very own UI, which is being called the Magic UI. It will have a lot of AI features, including the voice assistant Yoyo.

Given that the first generation Honor Magic was pitched at INR 39,065, we can expect the Honor Magic 2 to fetch INR 42,241. With top of the tier specifications at a price that is considerably lower than that of Google Pixel 3 (review), Samsung Galaxy Note 9, (review) and iPhone XS Max, it seems that the Honor Magic 2 will perform well in the market.

Check out our Honor 9N review while we wait for the launch of the Honor Magic 2.
