Moto G8 Plus vs Redmi Note 8 Pro vs Realme 5 Pro: Price in India, Specifications, Features Comparison

Motorola, last week launched its new budget handset the Moto G8 Plus in India. The Moto G lineup of smartphones was the first to start the trend of value for money, affordable smartphones in India. However, its position has more or less been taken over by brands like Xiaomi and Realme, who are faster with their product cycles. In this article, we take a close look at how the new Moto G8 Plus compares against two of the most popular smartphones in the budget segment – the brand new Redmi Note 8 Pro from Xiaomi and the Realme 5 Pro.

Moto G8 Plus vs Redmi Note 8 Pro vs Realme 5 Pro: Price in India

The Moto G8 Plus keeps things simple for the buyers. The phone is available in a single version that packs in 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. This version will set users back by INR 13,999.

The Redmi Note 8 Pro comes in three versions; a base variant that gets 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage with a price tag of INR 14,999, a pricier 6GB version with 128GB of storage that retails for INR 15,999, and a top-end 8GB variant with 128GB storage that has been priced at INR 17,999.

As for the Realme 5 Pro, this one comes in three versions starting with a 4GB +64GB version that retails for INR 13,999, a mid-tier 6GB+ 64GB option that has a price tag of INR 14,999 and a top-end 8GB+128GB variant that has been priced at 16,999.

Moto G8 Plus vs Redmi Note 8 Pro vs Realme 5 Pro: Specifications compared

The Moto G8 Plus comes powered by the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 chipset, which is based on an 11nm manufacturing process. The Redmi Note 8, this time around, has opted for a MediaTek chipset with the company using the gaming-centric Mediatek Helio G90T chipset for the Note 8 Pro. This chipset is based on a 12nm manufacturing process and claims to offer excellent gaming performance. The Realme 5 Pro, on the other hand, comes powered by the Snapdragon 712 chipset, which is based on a 10nm manufacturing process – and is technically the most power-efficient processor in this group. Overall performance, in our opinion, should be better on the Redmi Note 8 Pro since the G90T competes with Qualcomm’s T30G chipset, which is usually found on more expensive handsets.

Moving on to the displays, all three handsets in this comparison get an IPS LCD display with FHD+ resolution. The Moto G8 Play and the Realme 5 Pro use a 6.3-inch display with slightly different aspect ratios (19:9 and 19.5:9 respectively) while the panel on the Redmi Note 5 Pro is larger at 6.53-inches. While the Moto G does not claim to offer any sort of screen protection technology, the Redmi Note 5 Pro gets Corning Gorilla Glass 5 for durability while the Realme 5 Pro makes use of Corning Gorilla Glass 3+. With 500 nits of claimed brightness, the Redmi Note 7’s display also happens to be the brightest among the three

Moto G8 Plus vs Redmi Note 8 Pro vs Realme 5 Pro: Cameras and Imaging Specifications compared

While the Moto G8 Plus ships with triple cameras, both the Redmi Note 8 Pro and the Realme 5 Pro feature a quad-camera setup at the rear. The Moto G8 Plus and the Realme 5 Pro both feature a 48-megapixel primary camera with slightly different aperture values (f/1.7 and f/1.8, respectively). The Redmi Note 8 Pro wins the megapixel race thanks to its 64-megapixel primary camera, which is mated to an f/1.9 lens.

The secondary camera on the Moto G8 Plus is a 16-megapixel f/2.2 ultrawide angle camera while the Redmi Note 8 Pro and the Realme 5 Pro use an 8-megapixel camera with f/2.2 aperture for the same purpose. The third camera on the Moto G8 Plus is a 5-megapixel depth sensor. The Redmi and Realme devices also get a 2-megapixel depth sensor. Both these handsets also get a fourth camera at the rear, which functions as a dedicated macro camera.

At the front, all three devices use fixed-focus cameras with different resolutions. The Moto G8 Plus gets a 25MP front-facing camera with f/2.0 aperture while the Redmi Note 8 Pro gets by with a 20MP camera with f/2.0 aperture. The Realme 5 Pro gets by with a 16MP front-facing camera with f/2.0 aperture.

Moto G8 Plus vs Redmi Note 8 Pro vs Realme 5 Pro: Battery capacity, Which one to buy?

The Moto G8 Plus, on paper, has the smallest battery among the three, with the device getting a 4,000mAh battery. The phone also supports 18W fast charging using the supplied Turbocharger. The Realme 5 Pro gets a slightly larger 4,085mAh battery with support for OPPO’s VOOC 3.0 fast charging support. In our experience, this is among the fastest charging technologies we have seen in budget handsets. The Redmi Note 8 Pro gets an advantage in the battery size department because of its larger size and ships with a 4,500 mAh battery with support for 18W fast charging.

As for which handset among these three to choose from, the choice is not an easy one. If you are looking for something on a tight budget, the G8 Play is a reasonable choice as it is the most affordable among these three This phone also gives users the simple, clean stock Android UI experience minus ads and bloatware.

The Realme 5 Pro is a potent competitor to the Redmi Note 8 Pro, and there is little to no drawback that we can think about this phone. The company has made several improvements to ColorOS, and as things stand now, it is easy to use and is a lot less cluttered than how things were earlier.

The Redmi Note 8 Pro is the current spec-king in this segment, and even with its MediaTek chipset offers great bang for your bucks. It also gets the highest resolution camera among these three phones. However, only after a detailed review can we discern if the camera is really as good as Xiaomi claims it to be. Additionally, the MIUI experience is a mixed bag of sorts, with some people liking the UI and some others not really into it.

If I had to spend less than INR 15K for a new handset, I would save some money and opt for the Moto G8 Plus, which I think offers an overall better experience in terms of software optimizations. What would have you done?
