iPhone XR Turns Out To Be The Global Top-Seller For Most Of 2019

As per the market analysis firm CounterPoint, Apple’s iPhone XR has topped the sales chart across the globe. While the data for the fourth quarter of 2019 is yet to be released, the iPhone XR has taken the numero uno spot for three consecutive quarters. The handset accounted for 3 percent of total smartphone sales for the year. The Not so far behind is Samsung budget smartphone Galaxy A10 that costs Rs 8,000 in India. This phone has raked in an impressive 3.6 percent of the smartphone market. It is followed by another handset from Samsung, the Galaxy A50. The first Chinese brand to make an entry on the list is Oppo, owned by BBK electronics. Its Oppo A9 takes the 4th spot with a 1.6 percent share. Oppo returns with its A5s and A5 for 6th and 8th positions respectively.

The iPhone XR made for a quarter of global iPhone sales in Q3 2019

The success iPhone XR is attributed to its relatively affordable price and Apple’s brand perception. Introduced in 2018, this handset was discounted throughout this year. In India, it currently sells for under Rs 50,000, which isn’t as crazy as the latest iPhone 11 Pro with a starting price of 1 lakh rupees. According to the report, the XR alone contributed to over one-quarter of the total Apple sales during Q3.

Xiaomi barely makes it to the top 10

Xiaomi, which is one of the best-selling brands in India, isn’t so popular globally. Its only handset to appear on the list is Redmi 7A at the 9th position. Chinese telecom giant Huawei’s P30 settles for the 10th spot. The company might have taken a hit due to the sanctions that barred it from conducting business with American companies for a few months. While the company has received some respite in terms of the hardware side of things, the new Huawei phones lack Google app support.

Biggest winners

Apple emerges as a winner by taking the first and fifth positions. Samsung and Oppo have performed quite well too. Both these brands have three entries each in the top 10 line-ups. CounterPoint points out that Samsung’s gains were at the expense of Huawei’s Honor series. However, its flagship handsets such as Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy S10 didn’t break into this list. Another trend worth noting is the decline in global handset profits.
