PS5 Won’t Have Support for SSD Storage Expansion at Launch, Confirms Sony

Sony PS5 comes out internationally starting November 12 and the first reviews for Sony’s next-gen console are now out. The next generation of gaming is looking pretty good if you pad your expectations. The PS5, touted as the Future of Gaming, has some flaws as one would expect. One of these flaws seems to be the fact that PS5 SSD expandable storage will not be a possibility upon launch.

The PS5 has an internal slot for SSD expansion, that takes standard M.2 SSDs. The Verge actually got a confirmation from Sony that the PS5 SSD storage expansion will not be available at launch. Sony said, “[T]his is reserved for a future update.”

Sony PS5 Runs Low on Storage, Expansion Not Available Either

Storage seems to be a problem for next-gen gaming. We had recently talked about how the Xbox Series S only has 364 GB of SSD storage space available, and it looks like PS5 is suffering from the same problem, only worse.

First of all, next-generation games take up more space for all that Ray Tracing goodness. That means that the new consoles should have come prepared, but that’s not the case. The PS5 has an SSD storage space of 825 GB, rather than 1 TB as one would expect. Furthermore, out of this, only 667 GB of SSD storage space is usable, as multiple reviews have now confirmed.

Adding that very limited storage space availability, the huge game sizes, and the fact that Sony is not making expandable storage available at launch put together, makes the whole situation look quite bad.

The holdup is apparently because the M.2 SSDs require a compatibility testing from Sony. The SSDs need to be fast enough, small enough to fit into the PS5 SSD bay and work with Sony’s I/O controller.

Sony will be doing compatibility testing with M.2 SSDs “late this year”, so maybe we can hope for PS5 SSD storage expansion for 2021.
