The Sony PS5‘s storage woes continue. We had recently discussed how the PS5 will not let users upgrade their storage with the spare M.2 SSD slot present in the console. Given the fact that the PS5 has an 825 GB SSD, of which the usable space comes to only 667 GB, this seemed like a rather restrictive move. However, it seems like the file management issues don’t end there.
A new report by GamesRadar says that the brand new console from Sony will not let users export their game save files to USB sticks, either.
PS5 Needs PS Plus Subscription To Back Up Game Save Files
GamesRadar is reporting that you will now need a PlayStation Plus subscription to be able to back up your game save files to a USB stick. This is a step back, given that you could do it on the PS4.
Now, to be able to back up your game save files, you will need a PlayStation Plus subscription for your PS5. Cloud backup seems to be the only option, which pretty much makes offline play more inconvenient. Interestingly, you can back up game save files to a USB stick if you play the game on PS4, and then move to PS5. Here’s what the report says:
“So if you were playing Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War for example on PS4 and transfer your save data over to PS5, you could then back up that save file to a USB stick. But if you started playing Assassin’s Creed Valhalla on PS5, you couldn’t transfer that save to a USB stick.”
There doesn’t seem to be a good reason as to why Sony has done this, other than the fact that it wants people to subscribe to its service. The service is a decent offering but pales in comparison to the behemoth that is the Xbox Game Pass. Either way, forcing users to subscribe to a service by taking away features that have been, and should be free, is not the best means to increasing subscriber count.
