However, there has not been any official confirmation from the company. Tipster Ishan Agarwal believes that the Phone (1) black colour option is coming soon. The tipster has shared a design render of the black colour option.

As seen in the design render below, the Phone (1) has a transparent back that covers the LED strips. The metal sheet that covers the internals is painted black instead of the white one which we have already seen.

Other specifications of the device have leaked as well. The Phone (1) will sport a 6.55-inch OLED display with a hole-punch cutout at the top left corner. The bezels are thin and uniform across the edges of the display. It also supports a 120Hz refresh rate.

The smartphone will come with a 45W fast charging, wireless charging and 5W reverse charging support. It will not feature an adapter in the box.

On the back, the Phone (1) has a 50MP main camera and a 16MP ultrawide camera. It will feature a 16MP front camera sensor. The device will also come with an in-display fingerprint scanner, a USB Type-C port, Bluetooth 5.2, etc. The phone also has multiple LED strips, which have over 900 individual LED lights that will light up when the user gets a call or notification.

The company has confirmed that the Phone (1) will be available for purchase via Flipkart. Nothing is reportedly working with Reliance Digital to make the device available offline. There is no official confirmation from the brand at the moment.

Google's Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL receive what is almost certainly their last update

While right now it offers a longer support window, Google's Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL aren't covered by it since they launched before it was announced. As such, their software support should have ended back in November of last year. And yet Google still delivered updates to these devices in January and February. The build sent out in February was expected to be the last ever to be received by these phones, but Google likes to be surprising so it's sending out one more update to the Pixel 3 and 3 XL. This is surely the last one they'll ever get, but it's an important one if you plan on using...

Asus ROG Phone 3 finally gets to taste stable Android 12

Asus has finally released the stable, finalized update to Android 12 for the ROG Phone 3 from 2020. According to the company's schedule, this was supposed to come out in the first half of the year, and so it's kept its promise, if only by a few days. Asus sure took its sweet time with this one - Android 13 is practically around the corner, but ROG Phone 3 owners only now get to taste last year's Android 12. Such is the life of gamers, presumably. Anyway, the new build is labeled 31.0210.0210.230, and it lands after an almost two-month beta testing period, so hopefully there aren't any...

The state of Wear OS is still not clear. Google promised an overhaul with Wear OS 3 and we’re expecting a new Google Pixel Watch that runs Wear OS 3. Top 10 trending phones of week 25

After making the top 10 last week, when they were still a rumor, the Poco pair of F4 and X4 GT were the favorites for topping our chart this time around. It was not to be, though, as the Nothing Phone (1)'s teaser campaign was so successful there was nothing stopping the company's first phone. The Poco F4 thus had to once again settle for the silver medal, while the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra dropped to third. The Galaxy A53 held onto fourth position as the Poco X4 GT didn't manage to improve from fifth. The Redmi Note 11 slid to sixth, but still managed to stay ahead of the Apple...

POCO F4 Features 64MP OIS Camera: What is Optical Image Stabilisation, How is It Useful?

Poco, after making several rounds in the media for its features, finally launched its Poco F4 5G smartphone in India. The handset is priced at Rs 27,999, Rs 29,999 and Rs 33,999 for the 6GB+128GB, 8GB+128GB and 12GB+256GB variants respectively. While the price is definitely competitive and undercuts its rivals from different brands, what makes the offering more interesting is its camera performance. For those unaware, the smartphone sports a triple rear camera setup consisting of a 64MP (f/1.79) main sensor with OIS and EIS support. The other two camera modules include an 8MP (f/2.2) ultra-wide-angle lens and a 2MP (f/2.4) macro sensor.

While a 64-megapixel camera offering in sub-Rs 35,000 price range is not an easy feat, Poco F4 5G has managed to add OIS on top of it. OIS or Optical Image Stabilisation is not a new term for those who already know about smartphone cameras. However, it is surely a great deal since it is often considered one of the key factors that determine the shooting capabilities of the smartphone.

So, that brings us to the most important and most obvious question – What is OIS and how is it beneficial for your smartphone camera?

Also read: POCO F4 5G Review: An Excellent Daily Driver

What is OIS?

Optical Image Stabilisation is increasingly becoming one of the common features in nearly all smartphone cameras. However, the way it works is where all the difference lies from one smartphone to another. In the simplest of terms, OIS uses hardware and software processing which are advanced enough to compute the shakes, light, sensor and colours to combine them in milliseconds and give the most stable output. As a result, all the hand movements and accidental shakes still end up as stable videos or sharp images. This also means that without OIS there’s a high possibility that your selfies, portraits or images of your pets come blurry. And in case you miss out on OIS, a tripod, monopod or a gimbal is your only saviour.

poco_f4_5g_camera

In your smartphones, the OIS tech uses a micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) gyroscope that detects your hand movements to adjust the sensor or the lens accordingly. To be precise, it takes milliseconds to judge your hand movements and moves the camera in the opposite direction to make the image or the video sharp and stable. Since this entire movement of the camera is pure hardware-based, there’s no software crunch required like cropping. The entire sensor is used to deliver a zero-distortion output.

So, how do the cameras move up, down or sideways to balance the handshake and deliver sharp images? The answer is electromagnets. These often move in all four directions to give a stable shot. However, in some flagship smartphones, the camera sensor moves in six directions including the front and backward movement. This indirectly makes the entire module act as a gimbal in itself.

But although OIS works the best in the daytime, it’s more useful at night or in low-light scenarios. Why? Because that is the time when the camera shutter stays open for a longer time with a wide aperture to get more light. Since the shutter is open for long, it can often lead to a blurry image/video because our hands are not as stable. That’s where OIS shows its magic.

poco_f4_5g_OIS

No OIS in All the Phones Yet

Now that you have an idea of what OIS is and how it can be beneficial for you, asking the question of whether your next handset should have it or not, is more of a formality. If you have enough budget to spare, we would suggest you go for a smartphone that has an OIS camera sensor. Of course, OIS is a key feature and adding it to handsets also pushes the price of the overall device. Hence, you hardly see this feature in smartphones that cost below Rs 40,000. This also makes Poco F4 5G one of the rare ones out there that offer an OIS camera in the sub-Rs 35,000 price range.

In case you plan to opt for a more affordable smartphone, do check for something called EIS – Electronic Image Stabilisation. It is not as good as OIS since it uses software to digitally stabilise the shots, but it does help a tad bit when shooting in demanding situations.

vivo 50W Wireless Flash Charger test

The smartphone “charging wars” are predominantly fought on the wired front where some companies already passed the 100W thresh hold giving you a full 0-100% charge in around or even under 20 minutes. But every now and then the battle is carried over on the wireless front where makers are also reaching speeds that were unthinkable a couple of years ago. One such device is the vivo X80 Pro which we reviewed not too long ago and which supports 50W wireless charging. The only catch is that you need a specialized wireless charging stand. We recently received one such charger at our office –...

Week 25 in review: Poco F4 and X4 GT are official

Welcome to the end of week number 25. Let's take a look back. Samsung has apparently accumulated some 50 million unsold smartphones. The A-series is reportedly mostly to blame, failing to meet its sales targets for one reason or another. 50 million is around 18% of Samsung's planned shipment target this year, which isn't good at all. Samsung made around 20 million units per month early this year, but that dropped to around 10 million in May. This could be a reaction to having too many units stuck in inventory and seeing low demand. The lower demand has also made Samsung cut its component...

Huawei Nova 10 and 10 Pro massive leak with live photos and specs

We've already known that the Nova 10 series is in the works. In fact, a previous leak already provided a rough estimate for a July launch and some renders and specs. Nothing compared to today's fresh and pretty massive leak, though, which details at least two distinct models - the Nova 10 and the Nova 10 Pro. Let's start with the live image first. It showcases what seems to be the Nova 10 Pro on the far right in silver - a slightly taller phone with a distinctly protruding camera island, just like in earlier photos and renders. The design of the Phone (1) sets it apart from most of the smartphones on the market. Other than the design, the phone is also confirmed to feature a Snapdragon processor. A Geekbench listing revealed that this processor is the Snapdragon 778G+ SoC.

While the company is creating a lot of buzz online regarding the features, buying the Phone (1) might not be as easy. Nothing will go the OnePlus-way and make its device available for purchase via an invite system.

The company confirmed the details via a new teaser uploaded on its YouTube channel and other social media accounts. In the video, at 13.20 minutes, Nothing confirmed that its smartphone will be available for purchase via an invite-only system. It wants its community members – the ones who have been with the company since the beginning – to get their hands on the device first.

Carl Pei’s former company OnePlus had a similar approach at the very beginning where it sold the OnePlus One through an invite-only system. Those with an invite could not only purchase the device but also share a couple of more invites with their friends and family.

The invite-only system also helps a company (In this case, Nothing) to ensure it does not accumulate stock by manufacturing more units than required. The method of availability will also help maintain the buzz for a slightly longer time.

Once the company manages to ramp up the production, the device will be available for purchase for more and more people.

Nothing Phone (1): Specifications and Features

Nothing has confirmed some key specifications and features of the Phone (1) ahead of its official launch, which is slated to take place on July 12. The phone’s transparent rear panel shell has multiple strips, which house over 900 individual LED lights. These lights glow up when the user gets a call, notification or when they are charging the phone.

The device is also confirmed to sport a dual-camera setup with an LED flash. It also supports wireless charging. At the front, there is a hole-punch display, with the cutout at the top left corner. The company has confirmed that the device will run Android 12 out of the box with a layer of Nothing OS on top.

The Phone (1) will also come with a Snapdragon 778G+ SoC, as mentioned above. It will have at least 8GB of RAM. Lastly, the phone is rumoured to support 45W fast charging. What do you think about the invite system for the Phone (1)’s purchase? Let us know in the comments below.
