Apple might have a new contract manufacturer in India. The Tata Group has reportedly started making Apple’s iPhone in India. According to a new report, the Indian conglomerate is making iPhones at Wistron’s South India plant. The new update arrives days after Apple CEO Tim Cook met Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran during his visit to India in April for the opening of the Apple Store in Mumbai and Delhi.

A Times of India report claims that the Tata Group is making iPhones at Wistron’s facility in outside Bengaluru. The report, citing multiple sources, stated that Tata Group is making iPhones at Wistron’s Narasapura factory in Kolar district of Karnataka as it seeks to acquire the factory.

Tata or Apple have not officially confirmed any details about the former starting manufacturing operating and making the iPhone here in India. If the details are true, Tata would be the fourth manufacturer for Apple after Foxconn, Pegatron and Luxshare in India.

Tata Group Take Over Manufacturing Plant From Wistron

The Tata group has reportedly taken over Wistron’s operations in India as the Taiwan-based manufacturer is exiting its business in India. The Times of India report stated that there is still uncertainty over whether Wistron will make a complete exit from the Bengaluru operations. Citing its top sources, the report further added that the contract manufacturer has “firmly decided to fully exit the Apple operations to focus on other businesses.” The sources added that Wistron will continue to look for business opportunities in India for non-Apple products.

iPhones to Be Made in India By Tata Group: Key Events

Following rumours of Tata taking over Wistron’s plant outside Bengaluru, the report further added that select officials from the Tata group are already operating out of the facility, and the ambitious project is being carefully run under the watchful eyes of the group chairman Chandrasekaran, top Wistron and Apple executives in-charge of manufacturing.

Tatas are reportedly manufacturing iPhones for Apple in India already. The company’s representatives and officials have started getting involved in the operations, HR, and administration. They are getting trained on the operations and processes.”

The report further added that the government is playing a key role in encouraging and pushing Apple to not only grow its manufacturing ecosystem in India but also involve “credible Indian corporates” into the key functions such as manufacturing.

As stated above, neither Apple or Tata have confirmed any details about the contract.

iPhone 15, 15 Plus to Be Made by Tata in India?

The report about Tata making iPhones in India surfaces days after a separate report, which claimed that the largest conglomerate in India will make the upcoming iPhone 15 series. Tata will reportedly assemble a tiny chunk of the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus for Apple in India. It will only make about 5 per cent of iPhones for the tech giant here but join the exclusive club of contract manufacturers like Foxconn, Pegatron and Luxshare to make iPhones.

Foxconn, one of Apple’s oldest and biggest contract manufacturers, will make most of the iPhone 15 series models, followed by Pegatron and Luxshare. The Tata group is expected to get more orders for assembling the iPhone for Apple in 2024, following its performance streak in the coming months.
