The Android Pie has finally launched after much fanfare and many smartphone brands have started to roll out changes in accordance with the latest Android Operating System. While the ninth iteration of the Android OS brought in many features, some existing features that were present in Android Oreo have been restricted or removed. One such a feature for the Essential Phone are the notch settings, which has completely disappeared.
Notch settings feature explained
The notch was one of the most talked about feature on the Essential Phone. It drew a lot of fans as well as haters, much like the iPhone X, which had originally introduced the notch on its latest device. However, the biggest advantage that the developers of Essential Phone gave its users was the ability to customize the notch as well as the status bar area.
Moreover, this was a widely used feature by almost all users of the smartphone device. While originally the device was released without the notch settings feature, the developers released an update earlier this year in April that allowed users to customize how the notch was displayed by the phone.

While the notch was intended to bring an element of style onto the device, it largely hampered usability, as the top portion of the phone would always either be cut out by the notch or the screen size would be reduced to fit it without coming into contact with the notch. The developers had received several complaints from users and subsequently released an update to modify notch settings. Users could now modify the settings in three formats.
The first one was to use recommended settings, which would automatically adjust the screen based on the app type. The second disabled the use of the notch area and the third setting allowed the phone to always use the notch area. In addition to this users could also set their preferences to different apps and also provide a generalized setting as well.
What is with the removal of notch settings?
The Android Pie has been rolled out to users earlier this month and with this update, the notch settings have also been removed, as they were compatible only with Android Oreo. While the Operating System in itself provides support for notch settings, it is ultimately up to the developers of the devices to release a device specific update to enable support.
When asked a question on the company’s Reddit page, on the Ask Me Anything section for this month, a developer by name Marcus said that the update might be brought back to the phone in a future update:
Here is the full text of his comments – “We have discussed this internally and now that P has launched, it is very apparent from our community that you guys want this back in. It will take a bit of work since it is not a 1:1 code transfer from 8.1 to 9.0 given google changed the notch logic so a portion of the code will have to be re-written. But for the time frame on implementation, it will likely not be in the next security release given it will all need to be re-tested for stability. Thanks for pushing though…. We literally quote these comments when in roadmap planning meetings when we discuss notch settings.”
Let us hope that this feature is reinstated as early as possible, as this will provide users with the better flexibility to control and use the notch area.
