It is common knowledge by now that as compared to the rest of the world, Apple is still yet to find find its feet in India. The company has been under intense scrutiny in the country for its market strategies in India. Bloomberg also recently published a report about how the company has new plans to stay relevant in the country in the coming future.
During the end of 2017, Apple executive Michel Coulomb is said to have begun overseeing the company’s strategy in the country. During this period, few Apple employees reported that Apple CEO Tim Cook too has taken keen interest, working in the background, in the marketing strategies in India.
Some of the key areas that the company has been working on are better and longer-lasting retail deals along with the opening of official Apple retail stores in India, “overhauling” the company’s relationship with independent retailers, and improving apps and services which are “aimed more closely at Indians”, and also launching a new and improved version of Apple Maps by 2020.
Apple has had a slew of issues in the country. Apple iPhone users have long complained about the handset’s poor service and Apple Maps has also not done very well either. Although Apple Music received a decent amount of favourable response, the company’s voice assistant Siri didn’t receive many points as it failed to understand local accents and does not understand many words of Indian origin either.
As far as the retail stores go, Apple plans to open up new stores in New Delhi, Bengaluru and Mumbai in 2019. The company had run into troubles with the Indian government as it did not initially follow the rule for foreign companies opening stores in the country only if they manufactured 30 percent of their products locally, but it was able to overcome that eventually when it started building some of its iPhone SE and iPhone 6s models in India.

Apple’s ranking in the Indian smartphone market is quite abysmal. It ranks 11th of all smartphone manufaturers and has just one percent of India’s smarpthones sales. In the first half of the year, the company sold fewer than one million iPhones. Chinese manufacturer, Xiaomi, on the other hand, sold more than 19 million in the same period as per research firm, Couterpoint Research.
