Around 300 Facebook and a similar number of Twitter accounts have been removed by both the social networking sites on account of being found to be engaging in synchronized ‘inauthentic behaviour’. Most of these accounts are said to have originated from Iran.
The Inappropriate Accounts
Cybersecurity firm FireEye Inc tipped the two social media companies regarding the ethics breach. Acting on the same, Facebook and Twitter found the accounts not only promoting Iranian sentiments but openly carrying out ‘anti-Israeli’, ‘anti-Saudi’, and ‘pro-Palestinian’ discussions.
In a blog post, Nathaniel Gleicher, Facebook Head Cybersecurity Policy said that “We have removed 652 Pages, groups and accounts for coordinated inauthentic behaviour that originated in Iran and targeted people across multiple internet services in the Middle East, Latin America, UK, and the US.”
‘Coordinated Manipulation’ is how Twitter termed the efforts of the deleted social media accounts.
As described by FireEye Inc in a blog post, ‘the Influence Effort’ began sometime last year and was continued this month as well. However, stated FireEye, the activity doesn’t appear to be targeting to influence the 2018 Midterm Elections in the US. Reason being, the topics under open discussion go beyond the US politics and the country’s audience.
The removal of these accounts by Facebook and Twitter has happened just weeks after Facebook faced a similar situation from accounts originating in Russia. Then too, the SNS had to take down pages that were engaging in ‘deceiving behaviour’. Facebook also confirmed that they found further pages engaging in ‘inauthentic behaviour’ linked to Russia. But the activity doesn’t show any ties with the activity originating from Iran.

The Action Plan
The SNS refused to comment on the reason and method behind this misconduct as they are yet to complete the review of the confiscated material. But the governments of the US and UK, US Treasury, and the State Department have all been informed of the development because of the existing sanctions against Iran.
In a hastily conducted conference call with the members of the press, Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg confessed that there is a lot that they don’t know yet. But the company did confirm that the identification and removal of offending pages, accounts, and groups come as a result of four ongoing investigations; three concerning Iran and one on Russia.
The Offenders
‘Liberty Front Press’, attached to the Iranian state media, set up multiple accounts on Instagram and Facebook in 2013. The group quickly amassed 155,000 followers. They began posting political content concerning the Middle East, UK and US, though the stress on West began only last year. It is speculated that the group could be made up of liberal US activists supporting Sen.Bernie Sanders.
Another group linked to the ‘Liberty Front Press’ too had multiple accounts and around 15,000 followers. It was engaged in spreading malware, whose efforts were successfully disrupted by Facebook. The third group had 813,000 followers and shared political content.
The fourth group that had ties with Russia was attempting to influence the political climate of Ukraine and Syria and has suspected links with the Russian Intelligence. Facebook assured that US law enforcement and the SNS are working closely to solve the issue.
