During Apple’s iPhone launch in September, the company unveiled three brand new models. For the first time, the manufacturer introduced dual-SIM support for the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and the iPhone XR. Unfortunately, some features including Group FaceTime were not enabled by default – meaning that a software update would eventually resolve this matter. Apple is expected to release its iOS 12.1 update soon, and it will finally be activating a few of these features.
iPhone XS, iPhone XR iOS 12.1 Software Update Details
Apple released an iOS 12.1 user guide, which is available for free through Apple Books and it remains largely unchanged from the previous version created for iOS 12. However, there are two new additions that will come for the iPhone XS and iPhone XR; Group FaceTime and dual-SIM support. These are expected to be available from October 30. Aside from this, you can expect a few bug fixes and performance optimizations.
With Group FaceTime, you can video chat in group with up to 32 people included at once, but it requires an iPhone 6s or newer device. The dual-SIM feature is more accurately called Dual-SIM Dual Standby. It means that both phone numbers are active simultaneously. The user will actively be able to answer calls from both numbers automatically. During the iPhone XS and iPhone XR launch, Apple introduced a special dual-SIM variant for China and Hong Kong, while US customers will rely on a single SIM + eSIM solution. For the dual-SIM versions, you will need to insert two physical SIM cards for either the iPhone XS or iPhone XR to recognize those.
Other changes to be introduced are improved selfies and a fix for Smart HDR. Down the road, users might even be able to access their WhatsApp via Face ID, or Touch ID on older iPhone models. There will also be more than 70 new emoji, as well as live Depth Control for iPhone XS and iPhone XR. With this, you can adjust the blur of Portrait images in the camera viewfinder.

The LCD-based iPhone features a bigger 6.1-inch display, compared to the 5.8-inch screen for the iPhone XS.
Both models get support for Face ID and also, Apple has permanently removed the home button for its mobile phones. The iPhone XR buyers lose out on 2x optical zoom. It can, however, produce high-quality image using Bokeh using computational techniques, along with 5x digital zoom.
The iPhone XS features IP68 dust and water-resistance, while the iPhone XR receives the IP67 rating. The iPhone XS is also pricier, so some buyers might opt for the iPhone XR believing that the latter offers more value. Some industry reports have claimed that Apple will sell more iPhone XR units down the road due to it possessing nearly the same features as the company’s more expensive models.
