BSNL in Talks With Netflix for a Tie-up, 4G Services in Telangana Will Rollout Starting Next Month

State-owned telecom BSNL is all set to launch its 4G services in India. But before this, a pilot will be launched for testing purposes. For that reason alone, the state of Telangana has been chosen as the testing ground. In November, BSNL 4G services will be introduced in two towns of two different districts of the state. Besides this, BSNL is also working on a partnership with Netflix.

A Potential Tie-up with Netflix

Just after announcing its alliance with Amazon Prime, BSNL revealed that it is in talks with the other big content aggregator, Netflix. BSNL is looking to tie-up with Netflix just as it did with Amazon Prime to add more value to their postpaid and BSNL plans and attract more consumers.

Sundar told PTI about the potential partnership with Netflix but did not offer any more details on the same nor did he reveal what this association could mean for BSNL users in terms of offerings.

Expectations from the BSNL-Netflix Tie-up

Bharti Airtel recently revealed that it is offering three months of free Basic Netflix subscription worth Rs.500 on its Infinity postpaid plans, except for the base plan of Rs.399. BSNL also unveiled its alliance with Amazon Prime by offering its free subscription to its Rs.399 and above postpaid users and Rs.745 and above broadband subscribers.

The state-owned telco is likely to offer a similar deal to its postpaid and broadband customers concerning Netflix. BSNL might also offer the Basic Netflix membership to its selected subscribers. But all this is still speculation. Everyone will have to wait and watch and see what deals BSNL comes up with to compete with Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel.

The Need for such Partnerships

The Indian consumer is no longer satisfied with satellite television and has begun looking more content. That is also the reason why digital content providers like Amazon Prime and Netflix are so in demand these days. BSNL too wants its users to enjoy the services offered by these platforms. Private telecom operators Bharti Airtel and Vodafone India have already inked their deals with Netflix and are offering free subscriptions of up to a year along with their lucrative postpaid and broadband plans.

The 4G Roll Out Plan

V Sundar, Chief General Manager, Telecom Circle Chief of BSNL Telangana told the reporters about this new development. He informed them about how BSNL will be bringing 4G services to two different towns of Telangana in November. Wyra in Khammam district will be one of the telco’s testing grounds. The other town will be Jadcherla that falls in the Mahabubnagar district.

The plan, as told by Sundar, is that once the initial testing phase is over, the 4G services of public sector telecom operator will be introduced in the rest of the state and the partnering state of Hyderabad, by the month of March next year. Sundar expects BSNL to add 8 to 9 lakh new subscribers to their user base by March 2019.

18th Formation Day Celebrations

BSNL came into being on 1st October 2000, 18 years ago. To commemorate such a momentous occasion, BSNL has launched four new loaded prepaid STVs for its subscribers. The new prepaid plans introduced on the occasion of 18th Formation Day, come stacked with data and talk-time benefits.

The new prepaid plans come on the back of BSNL’s announcement of offering Amazon Prime membership to select postpaid and broadband customers. BSNL has also rolled out a 2-day base-level prepaid plan that offers unlimited calling and data benefits for only Rs.18 to its subscriber.
