Firefox 63 for Android adds support for Picture-in-Picture in latest update

Firefox for Android just got a whole lot more useful with the latest update that sees version 63 add picture-in-picture mode to the app. Firefox has seen quite a few updates in recent months including Photon UI and an enhanced CSS rendering engine. With more features being added, Firefox may be about to give Chrome a run for its money.

Firefox Version 63 for Android is now available and adds picture-in-picture mode and notification channels to its feature set. While picture-in-picture mode is fully enabled in the latest version, the changelog states that Firefox 63 has “started using notification channels”. Firefox doesn’t have per-site notifications so is one down on Chrome on this front, but does include individual options for media playback, synced tabs, downloads, and web push notifications. With the changelog suggesting that this version has started using notification channels, it no doubt won’t be too long before the functionality is expanded to see per-site notifications to rival that of Chrome’s capabilities.

Firefox version 63 Change Log

  • Added support for Picture-In-Picture video
  • Started using notification channels
  • Locales added: English from Canada (en-CA), and Ligurian (lij)
  • App now targets Oreo with security and performance improvements and support for new features

In addition to the new features introduced in this version, Firefox 63 also adds some fixes for security vulnerabilities including a fix for memory bugs, all of which can be viewed here.

Mozilla developers and community members Christian Holler, Dana Keeler, Ronald Crane, Marcia Knous, Tyson Smith, Daniel Veditz, and Steve Fink reported memory safety bugs present in Firefox 62. Some of these bugs showed evidence of memory corruption and we presume that with enough effort that some of these could be exploited to run arbitrary code.

While Chrome is arguably the most popular browser on Android, Firefox offers some excellent features and with picture-in-picture natively supported it brings something that is incredibly popular in apps like YouTube and could see users flock to it over Chrome.

The new version of Firefox should be making its way to a Play Store near you and you can download Firefox 63 from the Play Store or, if you can’t wait, from APKMirror.
