Huawei brings Watch 2, Watch 2 Classic, and Watch 2 4G to India

It was one year ago last month when Huawei launched its Watch 2, Watch 2 Classic, and cellular-connected Watch 2 4G in India. Despite the wait, Huawei has finally brought these three new smartwatches to buyers. You can now purchase these smartwatches at India’s official Huawei site.

The second-generation Huawei smartwatch and the first-gen. Huawei Watch are identical, with the exception of the new eSIM that lets you switch carriers remotely. You can only access 4G connectivity in the Watch 2 4G model if the carrier allows it, however. Apart from the eSIM, you’re looking at the following specs:

  • 1.2-inch circular AMOLED display with a 390×390 (328PPI)
  • 1.1Ghz, Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 2100
  • Gorilla Glass 3
  • 768MB RAM, 4GB of storage
  • Microphone, Speaker
  • 420mAh battery, fast charging
  • ceramic bezel
  • IP68 water and dust resistance
  • 4G connectivity (only for the Watch 2 4G model; all others have Bluetooth connectivity only), 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1 LE
  • SIM/eSIM
  • GPS
  • Heart Rate Monitor
  • Offline Music
  • Google Assistant
  • NFC (Near Field Communication)
  • Google Pay
  • Android Wear 2.0
  • multiple watch faces

Examining the Huawei Watch 2 specs

Huawei says its smartwatch has a “circular AMOLED” display, but this is nothing more than an AMOLED panel designed in a circular shape for its smartwatch. The resolution is strong. The Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 2100 SoC is dated, though, as the Snapdragon Wear 3100 has already been announced (the Huawei Watch 2 series is in the same boat as the Armani Exchange Connected. The 768MB of RAM and 4GB of storage are the same as last year’s model. I don’t understand why Huawei hasn’t increased its RAM and storage options yet, but apparently, it doesn’t feel it needs to.

The ceramic bezel gives the new series some durability, but the Gorilla Glass 3 (GG3) leaves a lot to be desired, especially when Samsung’s new Galaxy Watch comes with Corning’s Gorilla Glass DX+. Corning announced the new glass display in July; it would’ve been nice to see this on the Watch 2 series, though GG3 was agreed on for the series last year.

Google Assistant is Google’s artificial intelligence (or AI), and we’d expect it to make an appearance here since the second-gen Huawei Watch is running Android Wear 2.0. Keep in mind that the arrival of Wear 2.0 (or rather, the rebranding of Google’s wearables platform) means that you’re getting an outdated operating system here. For some reason, Huawei is bringing an outdated OS to users. This defies the mind, but then and again, Wear OS didn’t exist a year ago. Perhaps Huawei decided it was too late to bring the new OS rebranding to a dated smartwatch.

There is IP68 water and dust resistance, thankfully, but the Huawei series lacks the current swim-resistant protection of new smartwatches such as the Samsung Galaxy Watch or the new Apple Watch 4 Series.

The 420mAh battery and fast charging will sound pleasant to Watch users. There is no wireless charging here, though, so you’ll have to make due with wired charging.

Huawei Watch 2 series pricing and availability

The Huawei Watch 2 costs Rs. 20,999 ($285.91 USD). The Classic model costs Rs. 25,999 ($353.99 USD) and the 4G model Rs. 29,999 ($408.46 USD). While Amazon India is also selling the second-generation Watch series, the new smartwatches are not available for purchase just yet.

What say you? Glad to see the new Huawei watch in India, or do you think Huawei waited to late to bring it to its official store?
