Moto G5, G5 Plus Receive Android 8.1 Oreo OS Update, Brings Multiple Improvements, Bug Fixes

Motorola’s popular G-line devices were once known for great software back up coupled with sturdy hardware. However, in the past two years, the software part is no longer the same. The company has been under scanner, even many die hard fans are complaining about the G-series with regards to very slow OS updates. Case in point, the Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus are two devices that launched in early 2017, and they still haven’t received Android Oreo in some regions, for instance, the US. That changes today, on October 29, as Motorola has started rolling out Android 8.1 Oreo, the company added in a statement.

The update comes two months after Google announced Android 9.0 Pie which is already hitting some flagship devices across the globe.

The announcement is specifically for regions in the US as other places like India have received the update a month ago. This late update is a reminder for the company to improve upon its current software update situation which has left many users fuming.

Android Oreo Features on the Moto G5, Moto G5 Plus

Nonetheless, the Android Oreo update for the Moto G5 and G5 Plus brings a host of features that will be very useful. Motorola has issued a changelog detailing the contents of the OTA update. Obviously, Motorola’s version of Android is as close to stock as you can get, so Moto G5/G5 Plus users will get the unadulterated Android Oreo experience. Below is the summary of the new features as described by the company on its official website.

This update introduces changes including the following:

  • Android™ 8.1 Oreo™ : many enhancements including new multitasking features, more efficient notification controls and improved data saver, battery features, new power menu UI and Bluetooth improvements.
  • Android security: It includes the updates of Android security patches through June 01 2018.
  • Stability improvements: It includes changes that fix bugs and improve the stability of your phone.

How to update Moto G5, Moto G5 Plus to Android Oreo

If you haven’t received the OTA update notification, all you need to do is go to the Settings –> About phone –> System updates. Once there, search for the update and hit the download button when the system detects an OTA. If, you still don’t find an OTA, you will have to wait for sometime before the update shows up on its own in the next few days. Also, do let us know if you’ve downloaded the update and experience any improvements or bugs post Oreo.

Do remember to keep your batteries juiced up to at least 70 percent before hitting the install button and also check whether there is enough space for the new OTA files. Once this is done, you can sit back and enjoy the new Oreo treat on your Moto G5/G5 Plus.
The Moto G5 and G5 Plus came with Android Nougat, out of the box and this is the first major OS update the devices are getting in almost two years.

Interestingly, the update has landed after Google announced recently that smartphone OEMs will have to ensure that their devices get at least two years of Android security updates. Since this is the first major OS update for the duo, we can only imagine what will happen with Android 9.0 Pie updates for the 2017 series. Currently, none of Motorola’s G series phones run Android Pie, even the most recently revealed Moto G6 Plus runs on Android Oreo even though it will eventually get the Pie sooner or later.

While we are at it, check out another of the flagship devices from the brand below.
