Last week, Xiaomi launched the Redmi Note 6 Pro in Thailand, succeeding the incredibly popular Redmi Note 5 Pro. The smartphone is soon expected to be launched in a few other markets, although Xiaomi has not yet confirmed when the Redmi Note 6 Pro will be launched in India. While the Redmi Note 5 Pro continues to be one of the most popular budget Android smartphones around, the Redmi Note 6 Pro’s success will largely depend on its pricing. Here’s Why:

No Major Hardware Upgrades

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro is only a minor upgrade over the Redmi Note 5 Pro when it comes to hardware specifications. It runs on the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 octa-core processor, coupled with up to 4GB of RAM. For now, at least, Xiaomi is not offering a 6GB RAM variant of the Redmi Note 6 Pro. Rest of the hardware specifications like connectivity features and the battery capacity remain identical as well.

Intense Competition

When Xiaomi launched the Redmi Note 5 Pro in India in February this year, the smartphone had virtually no real rival. Things are very different today, as manufacturers like ASUS, Motorola, Realme, Nokia, and more others have released some very strong rivals to the Redmi Note 5 Pro. If Xiaomi decides to price the Redmi Note 6 Pro at a significant premium compared to the Redmi Note 5 Pro, it may force some Mi fans to consider some of the other options available in the market.

Not Everyone Likes MIUI

Xiaomi’s custom MIUI user-interface layer isn’t exactly everyone’s favorite. The latest iteration of Xiaomi’s heavy skin may not have a significant impact on system performance but it still isn’t the best manufacturer skin out there. While there weren’t too many smartphones offering a stock Android experience available below the Rs.15,000 mark last year, consumers do have more choices now with Android One smartphones like the Nokia 5.1 Plus available for as low as Rs.10,999. ASUS also offers a stock Android experience with its Redmi Note 5 Pro rival, the ZenFone Max Pro M1. Motorola One Power is another great option for users looking for a budget Android One smartphone.

An Almost Identical Design

Not only is the Redmi Note 6 Pro very similar to the Redmi Note 5 Pro in terms of hardware specifications, it also looks very similar. The only major difference is the notched display on the front, which allows for an improved screen-to-body ratio compared to the Redmi Note 5 Pro. From the rear, the two smartphones look pretty much identical. The smartphone comes with a metal unibody construction, which is again no different compared to the current Redmi Note 5 Pro.

Slow OS Updates

When it comes to value for money, Xiaomi smartphones are no doubt among the best out there. However, if you care about consistent software support, Xiaomi may disappoint you. Thanks to its heavy skin, it takes longer for Xiaomi to roll out major OS upgrades for its smartphones. Android One smartphones, on the other hand, are guaranteed to receive regular monthly security updates for up to three years. In addition to security updates, Android One smartphones also receive two major OS upgrades. Redmi Note 6 Pro, on the other hand, is unlikely to receive two major OS upgrades.

Overall, the Redmi Note 6 Pro is no doubt a decent upgrade over the Redmi Note 5 Pro. It features 20MP + 2MP dual selfie cameras, slightly larger display with a notch at the top and an upgraded 12MP primary sensor at the rear. However, not everyone would be willing to pay a significant premium for these three additional features. So pricing is key for the success of Redmi Note 6 Pro.
