A few days after the Series 7 going on sale, the rumour mill has shifted its focus to the next-generation Apple Watch. According to a new report, the Watch Series 8 will feature a new health monitoring sensor. Let’s take a look at more details of the upcoming Apple Watch Series 8 slated to launch in 2022.

Apple Watch Series 8 could be unveiled at the iPhone 14 launch event. We are almost a year away from the launch and some details of the Watch have leaked. According to MacRumors, citing a DigiTimes article, Apple could include a new Blood Glucose monitoring sensor in its Series 8 smartwatch. The report states that suppliers of Apple Watch are working on short-wavelength infrared sensors, which will be fitted on the back of the smartwatch. This new sensor will measure the sugar levels in the wearer’s body. A Wall Street Journal report stated that Apple was facing challenges in incorporating blood glucose capabilities into the Watch due to its non-invasive approach.

A report from May 2021 also cited something similar. A Forbes report claimed that Apple is working on introducing glucose level monitoring next year. The company could also launch its next smartwatch with blood pressure monitoring and alcohol level monitoring in 2022. 

Currently in iOS 15, Apple has added blood glucose highlights in the Health app as a health metric. Users can provide the data by using external hardware. The introduction of blood glucose monitoring would mean that users would not have to rely on third-party hardware for monitoring sugar levels. That being said, Apple typically states that the features on its Watch are not to be relied upon and one needs to consult a medical professional provided they see any symptoms.
