Future iMac, MacBooks Could Deploy FaceID Via the Notch, Patent Reveals

Apple launched the new MacBook Pro models earlier this month with new M1 Pro and M1 Max processors. The new MacBook Pro models also came with many design changes, including the addition of the SD card and HDMI ports. However, the most notable change was the shrinking of bezels around the display with a notch on top. One might wonder that the new MacBook Pro also features the Face ID tech, which is found on the iPhone models. Unfortunately, that is not the case. However, it looks like Apple might include Face ID in future iMac and MacBook models.

Face ID on MacBooks and iMac?

Patents filed by Apple in March 2020 suggest that the company was already working on an iMac with a notch and perhaps even Face ID. Spotted first by Patently Apple, the documents revealed that one of the patents included a computing device that is capable of incorporating various systems. “In particular, the computing device includes a cavity that is capable of carrying operational components (e.g., camera, display, light pattern recognition module, processor, MLB, etc.),” the report stated.

It further reveals that the user may provide credentials while setting up the device to provide biometric authentication. These include details like the depth map of the user’s face, a profile of the user’s cornea, etc. Apple requires similar details for its Face ID tech on the iPhone.

Apple has also mentioned in the patents that “the systems and techniques may also be applicable to capturing face gestures and emotions, video chatting, generating emoji, encrypting data, unlocking the computing device, supplementing passwords, differentiating different users, and the like.” Images attached in the patent filing further support the inclusion of Face ID tech in a MacBook Pro model.

Apple currently offers Touch ID-based unlock in its MacBook Pro models. While the current set of MacBook Pro models only feature the 1080p webcam inside the notch, it looks like the next-generation MacBook models might finally feature Face ID.
