Latest Windows 11 Insider Build Brings Support For Handful of Android Apps Via Amazon App Store

One of the most exciting features of the latest Windows 11 operating system is the ability to run Android apps on laptops and PCs. However, this feature was not rolled out in the Windows 11 update that started rolling out earlier this month. The latest Windows 11 Insider build is now rolling out Windows 11 users which allow users to use a handful of Android apps via the Amazon app store. Let’s take a look at the new feature and how to use Android apps on Windows 11. 

Android apps on Windows 11

The first preview build is now rolling out to Windows 11 users who are part of the Windows 11 Insider program. However, the preview build is currently available for those who are part of the beta channel and also it is limited to the United States users.

To run Android apps on Windows 11 machines, Microsoft is using a new component called Windows Subsystem for Android, which powers the Amazon Appstore and its collection of apps. The subsystem, much like the subsystem for Linux runs in a Hyper-V Virtual machine. The subsystem includes the Linux kernel and the Android OS based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) version 11.

Currently, the Amazon Appstore offers only 50 apps for Windows 11 Insider. But, Microsoft has promised to release more apps through Windows Insider Program updates in the coming months. For now, you can install apps like Amazon Kindle, Comixology, Khan Academy for kids and there are also a few games like Lego Duplo World and Clash of Clans. 

How to use Android apps on Windows 11

To use Android apps on Windows 11 laptops/PCs, make sure you are on the latest Windows 11 beta build (Build 22000.xxx series builds). Once you are on the latest build, head to the Microsoft store and search for “Amazon Appstore”. Install the app and sign in with your Amazon account (US-based Amazon account) and explore a handful of Android apps on your Windows 11 machine.

Currently, the Amazon Appstore is limited to US users only, but you can install the app by simply changing your region to the US. Head to Settings > Time & Language > Language & Region > Under Country or Region, pick United States. Once this is done, restart the Microsoft Store app and now, you will be able to install the Amazon Appstore.
