The upcoming iOS update from Apple, announced at its latest Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC), will also reportedly bring a new feature that was not announced publicly as yet. The feature is pertaining to eSIM, the electronic embedded SIM card on iPhones, which is available on iPhones worldwide. While switching between two new iPhones required users to re-register their eSIMs, a new update spotted by Macrumors in the iOS 16 developer beta suggests that users will be able to transfer their eSIM settings using Bluetooth.
iOS 16 eSIM Feature: How it Could Work
According to the Macrumors report, iOS 16 would offer users the option to transfer the eSIM settings to their new iPhone when the new device is being set-up. The feature could be a simple step-wise process, and ease the way eSIM registrations would happen on new devices.
However, the report also adds that in order for this feature to work, users will need to wait for network operators to integrate such settings as well. With iOS 16 still in developer beta stage, it is not clear as to where does support stand from the end of telecom network operators.
It is important to note that even when adoption of the feature begins, it will likely start with international markets, and not India. Internationally, Apple has significantly larger market share for its iPhones, than what it does have in India.
Reports on the matter have stated that at the end of 2021, Apple has a market share of 4.4 percent in India — even after Indians bought more iPhones last year than ever before. This would be a significant factor behind the adoption of Bluetooth-based eSIM migration in India, since most devices supporting eSIMs in India are sold by Apple itself.
According to Reliance Jio’s official support page, Apple’s iPhones starting from iPhone XR support eSIMs. Apart from these, flagship Samsung phones from the Galaxy S20 series onward, the Galaxy Z series, and Motorola’s Razr foldable phones support eSIM. Given the niche offering of eSIM-supporting phones, it remains to be seen how the new iOS 16 feature is adopted in India.
iOS 16 is also expected to introduce support for always-on displays, but the same could be reserved for unveiling when Apple launches its iPhone 14 lineup. Reports on the matter have stated that the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max will be the ones to launch with the feature — although the iPhone 13 Pro series could get it too.
