iPhone 14 vs iPhone 13: Which is a Better Buy for Users in India?

iPhone 14 series has been launched. The new iPhone comes with some upgrades over the iPhone 13 series launched last year. At the Apple event, Apple launched four new models. There is no iPhone 14 mini this year and instead, Apple launched the iPhone 14 Plus with a 6.7-inch screen. There is also the vanilla iPhone 14, which is this year’s entry-level offering in the lineup.

The non-Pro iPhone models have got some minor upgrades over their outgoing models. Of course, the iPhone 14 Plus is an all-new model this year. It gets a bigger 6.7-inch screen and a bigger battery than the iPhone 14. With the iterative upgrades over the iPhone 13, should you consider buying the iPhone 14? Or should you buy the iPhone 13 if you have an older model? Here is a quick comparison between the iPhone 14 versus the iPhone 13.

iPhone 14 vs iPhone 13: Price in India

The iPhone 14 comes with a starting price of Rs 79,900 for the base 128GB model. The 256GB and 5612GB storage options are priced at Rs 89,900 and Rs 1,09,900, respectively. It comes in five colours –  midnight, blue, starlight, purple, and (PRODUCT)RED.

The iPhone 13 128GB variant, after the iPhone 14 launch, has a starting price of Rs 69,900. The phone was launched in India for Rs 79,900. The 256GB variant is now available for Rs 79,900. There is also the 512GB variant for Rs 99,900. It is available in Starlight, Midnight, Blue, Green, Pink and Product RED colours.

iPhone 14 vs iPhone 13: Design

The iPhone 14 and the iPhone 13 share the same design language. There is a flat frame with curved corners on both models. The phones also sport a wide notch at the top of the display for the front camera. The bezels around the display are thin, even the chin.

On the glass back, there is a dual-camera setup. The phones also feature an LED flash module inside the square-shaped cutout. The volume keys are on the left edge of the aluminium frame, whereas the power button continues to find its place on the right side.

Apple continues to offer the iPhone models with its proprietary Lightning port, which is located at the bottom edge between the speaker grille and the microphone cutouts.

The iPhone 14 weighs about 172 grams, whereas the iPhone 13 weighs 173 grams. Both iPhone models come with IP68 certification for water and dust resistance. The iPhones can survive under 6 meters of water for 30 minutes.

iPhone 14 vs iPhone 13: Display

Not a lot has changed here. Both phones continue to sport a 6.1-inch OLED Super Retina XDR display with a 2532×1170-pixel resolution. The screen has a peak brightness of 1200 nits and supports True Tone, HDR along with P3 wide colour gamut.

There is a wide notch, which is 20 per cent smaller than the iPhone 12 for the Face ID sensors and the front camera.

iPhone 14 vs iPhone 13: Performance and Software

The iPhone 14 draws power from an A15 Bionic chip. The chipset is the same found in the 13 Pro models from last year with six CPU cores and five GPU cores. The 6-core CPU handles demanding tasks smoothly and efficiently, and the 16-core Neural Engine is capable of 15.8 trillion operations per second, enabling even faster machine learning computations for features in iOS 16 and third-party app experiences.

The iPhone 13 also has an A15 Bionic chip, but this one comes with six CPU cores and four GPU cores.

Apple typically does not reveal the RAM details but reports suggest that all four iPhone 14 models offer 6GB of RAM. This is an upgrade for the non-Pro models as the iPhone 13 packs 4GB of RAM.

In terms of software, the iPhone 14 runs iOS 16 out of the box, whereas the iPhone 13 came with iOS 15 out of the box. Of course, the 2021 iPhone will get the new iOS 16 update later this year.

iPhone 14 vs iPhone 13: Camera

The two iPhones come with a 12MP dual-camera setup on the back. The newer models get a larger camera sensor with improved low-light performance and a wider aperture.

There is a 12MP main camera with an f/1.5 aperture and a 12MP ultrawide sensor. The LED flash module is also placed inside the camera module. For selfies, the iPhones feature a 12MP front camera inside the notch with an f/1.9 aperture. The front camera also gets support for auto-focus.

iPhone 14 comes with several camera features, such as a new action mode for a better video recording experience on the move. Apple has also worked on improving its Deep Fusion for improved performance and details in lowlight images. Users can expect up to 2.5x improvements in photos shot using the main camera and 2x improvements using photos shot on the ultrawide and front camera.

iPhone 14 vs iPhone 13: Battery

This is where the 2022 iPhone has got an upgrade. Apple typically does not reveal the battery capacity of its iPhone models. The vanilla model is claimed to offer up to 20 hours of battery life while watching videos on a single charge. As per reports from the rumour mill, the vanilla 14 packs a 3279 mAh battery. It continues to support 20W fast charging, 15W MagSafe charging and 7.5W Qi wireless charging.

The iPhone 13 is claimed to offer up to 19 hours of battery life on a single charge. It is said to pack a 3227 mAh battery inside.

iPhone 14 vs iPhone 13: Verdict

As clear as it gets, the iPhone 14’s biggest upgrade is its camera and battery life. The iPhone 14 also gets some new camera features along with a larger main camera sensor. It runs iOS 16 out of the box and is claimed to offer up to 20 hours of video playback on a single charge. Chances are that the 14 will get an additional software update compared to the 13 series.

Rest, there is the faster version of the A15 Bionic, which is also found in the iPhone 13 Pro models. The screen is also the same as the vanilla 13. iPhone 14 also comes with a new Emergency SOS via Satellite feature that uses satellites orbiting around the earth to help users connect to emergency services in areas with no network. It is currently available only in the US and Canada. There is no word on the India release of this feature at the time of writing this.

The iPhone 13, for Rs 69,900, might seem like a great buy after you factor in the minor differences and the price. During the festive online sale, the price of the iPhone 13 models could get further lower, thus offering an even better value.
