Android Oreo Becomes Second Most Used Version Of The OS; Pie Missing From Oct Distribution List

Google recently released the latest October Android distribution numbers, and Android Oreo has finally become the second most used version of operating system, leaving only Android Marshmallow. Meanwhile, the latest version of the mobile operating system, Android Pie, is still nowhere to be seen on the distribution list.

Ever since Google started releasing Android distribution numbers, the sad state of Android updates has been visible to all. It has been over three months since Google first debuted Android Pie 9.0 on the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, but even in the latest October release of Android distribution numbers, Android Pie is missing. What’s worse is the list still features Android versions as old as Gingerbread (Android version 2.3.x).

These numbers have been compiled from Android devices that visited the Play Store during a seven-day period, which ended on October 26th. According to the list, Android Nougat (version 7 and 7.1) is still the most popular Android version in use right now, with 28.2% of devices running on Nougat. Marshmallow was the second most popular Android version up until now, but it has been surpassed by Android Oreo with a combined percentage of 21.5%, between Android 8.0 and 8.1, which is a significant increase from last month’s numbers of 19.2%. Android Lollipop (version 5.x) comes in at the fourth spot with 17.9% devices running on it. Android Kitkat (version 4.4) is still at 7.6%, which is a significant number for a software version which was released more than 5 years ago. Finishing off the list are Android Jelly Bean (version 4.1-4.3) at 3%, Android Ice Cream Sandwich (version 4.0.x) at 0.3%, and Android Gingerbread (version 2.3.x) at 0.2%.

As mentioned before, Android Pie (version 9.0) is still nowhere to be found on the list, but this is also because very few phones have got the Android Pie update; notably OnePlus 6, Nokia 7 Plus and the Essential Phone.

However, things could change in the coming months as in the past few weeks, a lot of new phones have been launched with Android Pie. We’ve got the Pixel 3 family, the Huawei Mate 20 series and the just announced Oneplus 6T as well. With leading phone manufacturers like Samsung and LG struggling to roll out timely updates, it remains to be seen how long will it take for the masses to get the greatest of what Android has to offer.
