Samsung is finally making waves in the mid-range smartphone segment here in India, thanks to its new triple rear camera smartphone called the Galaxy A7 (2018). With the launch of another mid-range quad rear camera smartphone called Galaxy A9 (2018) set for November, the South Korean brand will certainly see its popularity rising in the crowded market segment.
But the fact that these two camera-centric smartphones are releasing in the same budget segment and the same time of the year means that there is bound to be some confusion among buyers. The rear quad and triple cameras of these two Samsung phones are similar in looks, both vertically aligned and fit into a single bezel. The Samsung Galaxy A9 is expected to arrive in India early next month, at a starting price of about INR 30,000. The Samsung Galaxy A7 is available for INR 23,990 in 64GB storage option, and for INR 28,990 with 128GB. It is available both offline and online.

The Samsung Galaxy A9 will come with a 6.3-inch display while the display on the Samsung Galaxy A7 is a slightly smaller 6-inch unit. Both are Super AMOLED displays with Full HD+ screen resolution (1080x2220p) and full but thin bezels, carved out in 18.5:9 aspect ratio. The handsets are both powered by octa-core processors clocked at 2.2GHz, but the Samsung Galaxy A9 has a Snapdragon 660 chipset while the processor on the Galaxy A7 is Samsung’s own Exynos 7885.
The Samsung Galaxy A9 is expected to come with a 6GB RAM and an 8GB RAM, both with 128GB internal storage. The Samsung Galaxy A7 offers a 4GB RAM and 64GB storage in the standard model, and a 6GB RAM with 128GB storage in the pricier one. Both handsets have dedicated microSD card slot for additional storage of up to 512GB. Both handsets also share the same Samsung Experience 9 user interface based on Android 8.0 Oreo, adding some nice features to it, such as Microsoft Office apps, Samsung Pay and Samsung Mall.

The Samsung Galaxy A7 gets a 3300mAh battery, while the Galaxy A9 will pack in a larger 3800mAh battery. The Galaxy A7 does not get fast charging, and while the Galaxy A9 will have fast charging support, Samsung has not specified exactly how fast. The fingerprint sensor is rear-mounted on the Galaxy A9, and smartly side-mounted on the Galaxy A7. Connectivity wise, the good news is that both handsets keep the 3.5mm audio jack intact, and offer dual-band WiFi, Bluetooth 5.0 Low Energy, and NFC. The Galaxy A7 ships with a regular microUSB 2.0, but the upcoming Galaxy A9 gets a Type-C reversible USB.
Samsung Galaxy A9 vs Samsung Galaxy A7: Conclusion
There is no doubt that the Samsung Galaxy A9 is a better mid-range smartphone when compared to the Samsung Galaxy A7, but it is also quite costlier. The starting price of INR 30,000 (expected) means that the handset will compete with the ‘flagship-killer’ segment of handsets, such as the OnePlus 6, Asus Zenfone 5Z, and the POCO F1. All of these handsets come with a flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 and offer excellent camera qualities too.
However, if camera hardware is your thing, then the new Samsung Galaxy A9 makes perfect sense, with its four cameras that each have a unique function. The Samsung Galaxy A7 is already a lucrative camera-centric smartphone in the mid-range segment, but adding a telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom makes the Samsung Galaxy A9 certainly better.
