Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite Goes Official in France and Ukraine, Coming Soon to More Global Markets

It’s been just over a month since Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi launched two new Mi 8 series handsets in China: the Mi 8 Lite and the Mi 8 Pro. Of these two, the Mi 8 Lite was of particular interest to us, Indians, because of its rather low sticker price. While there has been no indication that Xiaomi has plans to bring the Mi 8 Lite to India, what we know for sure is that the device will certainly be launched in select European countries. In fact, just a few days ago, Ukraine became the first non-Chinese country where the Mi 8 Lite was officially launched. And from what we know from recent reports, the Mi 8 Lite is set to be launched in yet another European country: France.

Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite; When is it launching in France?

According to GSMArena who first reported this, Xiaomi is yet to officially announce the date for the launch of the device in France. However, the reason we know the launch is just around the corner is because of a tweet put up by Donovan Sung, Xiaomi’s global spokesperson which more or less confirms that the Mi 8 Lite is on its way to France. We have embedded his tweet below.

As evident from the tweet above, Xiaomi also plans to bring the Mi 8 Lite to several other global markets. Let us hope one of them is India!

Mr. Sung’s tweet also indicates that the Mi 8 Lite could be offered in more color options. Currently, in China, the phone is offered in gradient Twilight Gold, Dream Blue, and Deep Space Gray colors.

Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite; Specifications and Features

The Mi 8 Lite features a large 6.26-inch notched IPS LCD display that has a resolution of 1080 x 2280 pixels and a 19:9 aspect ratio. As far as the chipset is concerned, the Mi 8 Lite uses Qualcomm’s mid-range SoC – the Snapdragon 660 which is based on a 14nm manufacturing process. This SoC also houses the powerful Adreno 512 GPU for graphics. In case you aren’t aware, Xiaomi uses the same chipset on the Mi A2. In China, the Mi 8 Lite is sold in three versions – an entry-level 4GB/64GB version, a mid-level 6GB/64GB version, and a pricier 6GB/128GB version.

All these versions feature a 12MP + 5MP AI dual-camera setup at the rear with support for AI Scene Recognition. The primary 12MP camera also boasts of 1.4um pixel size and uses an f/1.9 aperture lens for brighter images. At the front, the Mi 8 Lite gets a 24MP sensor. This front camera uses a Sony IMX576 sensor and also gets a bunch of AI features.  Connectivity options on the phone include support for Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac dual-band, Bluetooth 5.0 Low Energy, GPS with A-GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, USB Type-C port, and Dual 4G VoLTE. The phone lacks a 3.5m audio jack and houses a 3350mAh battery. Thankfully, there is support for fast charging. At launch, the handset will ship with MIUI 10 and Android 8.1 Oreo.

Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite: How much does it cost?

The prices of the Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite starts at 1,399 yuan (INR 14,800 approx.) for the base variant, while the mid-level 6GB RAM + 64GB storage version costs 1,699 yuan (INR 18,000 approx.). The priciest version is the 6GB RAM + 128GB storage version that has been priced at 1,999 yuan (INR 21,200 approx). Note that the converted Indian prices of the Mi 8 Lite are simply approximations at this time. There is a good chance that the handset might either be slightly cheaper or slightly more expensive if and when it is launched in India.
