Xiaomi Black Shark Helo Gaming Smartphone Goes on First Sale Today in China: Price, Features

Having unveiled the Black Shark Helo Gaming smartphone in China last week, Xiaomi’s subsidiary Black Shark officially goes on sale today in China. The second generation upgrade to the Black Shark sees yet another arm of Xiaomi branch out to offer a specialist device and this time it’s aimed at gamers.

The Black Shark Helo sees a redesigned body over its predecessor and some pretty decent specs to go along with it to bring it in line with the updated technology available in 2018. One thing that hasn’t changed is the backlit Black Shark logo on the rear of the device that is akin to the Razer phone. Xiaomi has taken the lighting a step further and has integrated LED strips on the side of the device for an added gaming feel.

As any PC gamer will know, the more lights you have on your PC, the better you are in the game. Ok, that’s not strictly how it works, but they look cool. Xiaomi has embraced the LED setup with the Black Shark Helo by incorporating LED strips on the side of the device to accompany the logo on the rear of the device that sees a metal frame with a patterned glass rear.

The device has a 6.01-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display with 18:9 aspect ratio and 2.5D curved glass. The Black Shark Helo is powered by the Qualcomm 10nm Snapdragon 845 processor and features up to 10GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage depending on the configuration. There’s no arguing that this device is a powerhouse with Xiaomi claiming the device scored a whopping 309,237 on Antutu benchmark.

For gamers that care about cameras, the Black Shark Helo isn’t a one trick pony – the device sports a 20-megapixel and 12-megapixel dual camera array on the rear of the device with Phase-detection Autofocus. This is accompanied by a 20-megapixel camera on the front of the device. As with most devices in 2018, the software sees an artificial intelligence enhancement that will recognize scenes and automatically adjust the camera settings for the environment, lighting conditions, and if it thinks you’re taking a selfie.

Of course, if you’re gaming for long periods of time on this device, it needs a large battery, and the Black Shark Helo doesn’t disappoint with a 4000mAh battery. It comes complete with an 18W charger, so if you do run out of juice, a quick charge should get you back online in no time.

The phone measures 160.0 x 75.25 x 8.7 mm and weighs 190 grams. On the connectivity front, it features USB Type-C port and 3.5mm audio jack. It has dual-SIM support but lacks microSD card support which means you won’t be able to expand the storage.

The Black Shark Helo has been launched in three variants – 6GB RAM + 128GB Storage, 8GB RAM + 128GB Storage, and 10GB RAM+ 256GB Storage. The base variant with 6GB RAM is priced at CNY 3199 (approx. INR 33,920) while the 8GB RAM model has been priced at CNY 3499 (approx. INR 37,101). Lastly, the top-end 10GB RAM variant costs CNY 4199 (approx. INR 44,524).

While the device is available now in China, we await word if the Xiaomi Black Shark Helo will make it to India as I’m sure there are some serious gamers that would love to get their hands on this device.
