Apple could launch a new iPad Pro in Q1 of 2021. According to a DigiTimes report, the rumoured Apple iPad Pro with a 12.9-inch screen would come with a mini-LED display. The report claims that Apple has diversified the supply chain for its displays and touch panels. China’s BOE will supply OLED panels for iPhones. GIS will provide touch panels for the iPhone and the upcoming iPad Pro. Reports of Apple working on an iPad Pro with mini-LED display have been around for quite a while. Previously, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had claimed that the rumoured iPad Pro with mini-LED will go in mass production in 4Q20. According to the DigiTimes report, Apple has finalised GIS to supply the mini-LED backlit panels for the iPad Pro 12.9-inch model. The Pro iPad model will launch in Q1 of 2021, the report added. The exact launch date of the Apple tablet is unknown at the moment.

A mini-LED display offers better wide colour gamut performance with high contrast and HDR. It also supports local dimming, which will dim the backlight behind the screen’s area that is displaying black, keeping the other parts bright. The use of mini LED displays will aid in providing better battery life.

The Pro iPad with the mini-LED display was previously tipped to launch in March 2021. The new display panels will offer significantly better overall display quality, including both higher brightness and a higher contrast ratio, to trump even OLED display panels in the market right now. The new Apple iPad Pro devices may most likely not feature a new design language but are still expected to be a sizeable upgrade in terms of specifications such as the processor inside, and perhaps better front camera capabilities as well.
