The Xbox Series X and Series S gaming consoles have now received Dolby Vision compatibility. According to a post from a Microsoft spokesperson earlier today, this marks the addition of both Dolby Atmos and Vision, the former being introduced to the new generation consoles at launch itself. Now, Dolby Vision support is being enabled on both the new generation consoles, to support the visual specification via HDR titles and through compatible televisions.
“Gamers with compatible Dolby Vision-enabled TVs will be able to enjoy full-spectrum visuals with the rollout of Dolby Vision gaming on Xbox Series X and S. With Dolby Vision, epic worlds – such as lush rainforests or neon futuristic cities – are brought to life in more vivid colour. Dolby Vision deepens your immersion into the experience by enabling you to see an enemy hiding in the shadows or spot hidden clues through expanded contrast and better clarity in both bright and dark scenes,” reads the Microsoft statement on the release.
Microsoft further states that it is working with Dolby to offer resources to developers, to help them either make their games compatible with Dolby Vision via the former’s built in developer resources within the Xbox platform. Alternately, they can also choose to incorporate Dolby Vision support directly into their game with the resources that will be made available. Microsoft further claims that it is also working with TV makers to help make the standard look as seamless as possible. TVs that support Dolby Vision should automatically detect compatible games via the Xbox Series X and Series S consoles, and switch to this mode without any stutter.
To hype up the release, Microsoft says there will be “more than 100” HDR games that are optimised for the Xbox Series X and Series S consoles, that will support Dolby Vision. This collection will also include Halo Infinite, which will likely serve as a flagship example of high frame rate, HDR, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos gaming on the new generation consoles.
