Google Updates Fast Pair to Work on Multiple Devices Simultaneously

Fast Pair, tech enthusiasts would already know it is a Bluetooth pairing feature that lets you connect Android devices seamlessly. Google has now released an update to make it easier for users to connect Fast Pair compatible accessories to your present and future Android devices associated with the same Google account. Also, next year onwards, Chromebooks would come with Google’s proprietary Bluetooth pairing technology.

Apple first introduced the quick pairing technology wherein, a Bluetooth headphone uses a built-in W1 chip to connect to an iPhone. Right now, only Apple AirPods and a couple of Beats Audio headsets come with an integrated W1 Bluetooth chip.

Google, in an attempt to make the Bluetooth pairing process simple and easy has launched the Fast Pair. Connecting devices over Bluetooth in Android is a mutiple step process where users have to go to Settings then migrate to Bluetooth, switch on pairing and then wait for the smartphone to discover another Bluetooth device. After recognition, users have to type a code on the smartphone to complete the pairing.

Now, the question is how does this work? For starters, the Fast Pair process is based on a set of specifications that lets you connect Bluetooth accessories to your Android device with a single tap. The pairing process uses BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) for advertising and discovery and then uses classic Bluetooth pairing and location data to connect them with a tap.

While the company has not said anything about the timeframe the whole process would take but Fast Pair will now let you connect multiple devices using the same Google account.
As per Google, the Fast Pair feature will work with all smartphones running Android 6.0 Marshmallow and has support for Bluetooth 4.0. However, the accessories that you want to connect must also support the technology. Presently, Jaybird’s Tarah Wireless Sport headphones come with the feature. Google is in talks with Anker and Bose to introduce accessories supporting Google’s Fast Pair technology. Also, the company has joined hands with major Bluetooth audio companies such as Airoha Technology Corp, BES and Qualcomm Technologies International, Ltd. (QTIL) to add native Fast Pair support to their software development kits, said Google.
