Watchout Netflix, Disney+ launching in India via Hotstar on April 3

Disney+ was originally set to launch in India via Hotstar on March 29 but is now officially launching on April 3. The information comes from Hotstar's Twitter account. The Tweet reads, “This is not a drill! The biggest Super Heroes, magical stories for everyone, exclusive Disney+ Originals and all that you've been waiting for are (finally) landing on Disney+ Hotstar. 3rd April. Really.” According to TechCrunch, the subscription fee for the service will go up from Rs 999 per annum to Rs 1499 per annum. Hopefully, we will get to see a bump in the streaming quality as well, but that is something we will know when the service is publicly available.

TechCrunch goes on to say that there is a more affordable plan priced at Rs 399. This plan will include movies from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) along with live sporting events and a catalogue of movies and shows along with Hotstar originals. The 399 plan will not include Disney+ Originals. The Rs 1499 plan, however, will offer customers content from partners including HBO, Fox, and Showtime. So if you are one that likes watching shows like Game of Thrones, True Detective and more, then the Rs 1499 plan is the one for you to consider.

Disney+ Hotstar was expected to launch in India on March 29, but it looks like this was delayed due to the Coronavirus outbreak. We still aren't sure about whether the service will finally start streaming in 4K and HDR or whether it will give users the option of profiles or increase the number of simultaneous streams. We will get you the answers to all these questions soon.

In the meantime, know that the Amazon Prime subscription costs Rs 999 per annum, giving you access to Prime Videos, Prime Music and Even Prime Delivery. Netflix has a bunch of plans ranging from the mobile-only Rs 199 per month plan all the way up to Rs 799 per month, giving you access to 4 simultaneous playbacks and quality up to 4K and HDR. You can read more about Netflix’s subscriptions here.

Disney Plus India Launch Date Set for April 3, Annual Subscription Price for Disney+ Hotstar Increased to Rs 1,499

Disney’s much-awaited Disney Plus streaming service will go live for India starting April 3, according to a press note issued by Disney India. The India-launch of Disney Plus comes just days after the service went live in seven European countries (the UK, Ireland, Germany, Italy, Spain, Austria, and Switzerland) simultaneously. Disney seemed to have decided to go ahead with the launch even as most of the word continues to reel under the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. On the flip side, with people spending more time at home, this might just be the perfect time for a launch for a new streaming service.

In India, Disney already owns and operates the popular streaming service Hotstar, and by the looks of it, the Disney Plus service shall be offered as an additional bouquet. Currently, the premium subscription to Hotstar costs ₹999 per year. With the addition of offerings from Disney, the price of this combined bouquet will go up to ₹1400 per year. At this time, there is no word if the package will be available without the Disney content at the existing price tag of ₹999.

Hotstar currently claims to have a userbase of more than 300 million monthly active users in India. The service generally sees a massive traffic spike during the March-May period during the IPL series. The 2020 tournament, however, seems to have been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing lockdown in India. This will almost certainly result in a reduction in the number of viewers for Hotstar this year.

Apart from the all-in-one plan that costs ₹999, Hotstar also has an affordable plan that currently costs ₹365 a year. The company is expected to increase the price of this service as well, with the price going up to ₹399 per year. Users with the premium subscription will be able to enjoy over 100 series and 250 superhero and animated titles, including Disney+ Originals and shows from HBO, Fox, and Showtime.

Disney has announced that all its existing subscribers will be automatically upgraded to the new subscription plans. They will, however, be required to pay the new rates upon renewal.

[Breaking] Xiaomi, OPPO Announce 5% Price Hike on Various Smartphone Models Owing to GST Rate Revision

Two weeks ago, following the 39th GST Council meeting on March 14, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced that the Government of India has decided to increase the GST rate on mobile phones and specified parts. Back then, the government confirmed that the new GST rates would applicable starting April 1, 2020. This decision by the GST Council meant that all mobile phones that attracted a 12% GST fee until now found themselves in the higher 18% GST slab.

With April 1, already here, and the government ignoring all pleas by the manufacturers to roll-back the GST hike, several companies are left with no option but to announce a marginal increase in the prices of their smartphones.  Among the first companies to have taken the decision to increase the prices of their smartphones include Xiaomi and OPPO.

Xiaomi, India’s largest smartphone brand, released an official statement shared across its social media platforms in which the company explained the circumstances in which they are forced to increase the prices of their handsets marginally. According to the statement, Xiaomi is left with no choice other than hiking the prices of their products with the new GST rates in place effective today. The company also cited the continuous depreciation of the Indian rupee against the US dollar as one of the reasons they have to hike the prices on their products. As of writing this story, the increased prices are not live on the company website.

Another company that has announced a hike in the prices of their products is OPPO. Unlike Xiaomi, however, the company is yet to make an official announcement. However, the company seems to have already intimated dealers and partners across the country about its plan to increase the prices of some of its handsets. Manish Khatri of Mahesh Telecom, a major smartphone retailer from Mumbai, recently announces the changes in the MOP of some OPPO handsets in a tweet sent out yesterday.

As evident from the tweet, the OPPO handsets affected by the price hike include the like of the OPPO Reno3 Pro and the OPPO F15 — both of which were launched just a few weeks ago. Other OPPO handsets that will see prices go up marginally include the OPPO A1k, OPPO A5s, OPPO K1, the OPPO A9, and OPPO Reno2 series.

Following the announcement to increase the GST rate on smartphones, several smartphone brands had appealed to the government to roll back the decision. However, at least for the time being, the Narendra Modi led government appears to be in no mood to relent. We expect more smartphone brands to announce similar price hikes and will update the article with more details as and when we get them.

YouTube streaming limited to 480p in India by Google

As the world grapples with social distancing, and India goes into what feels like its nth day of lockdown, YouTube has announced that they’re going to be changing the playback quality of the video playback to standard definition (SD) or more commonly known as 480p. The decision comes after Google observed a major uptake in the number of people streaming YouTube videos throughout the day.

The move comes in the wake of the fact that more people are now stuck at home, whether working or not and hence, streaming more content as a means of passing the time. Across Europe, all streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime had reduced the default streaming quality as the infrastructure came under heavy load. Google says that the kind of uptake in traffic they’re seeing on YouTube “won't break the internet,” but the company is limiting the stream quality anyway to reduce the strain on ISP and telcos.

In India, YouTube streaming has been capped at 480p, but only for mobile devices. Even if you’re connected to a home Wi-Fi network, your mobile device will not stream YouTube content in quality higher than 480p. This is strange because you can stream YouTube content in up to 4K (content willing) if you’re on a computer. In fact, if you choose to forego the YouTube app and use the browser on your phone instead, you can get a slightly higher quality stream at 720p.

According to a report by Bloomberg, there’s been a steady rise of 20 percent in online streaming since the Coronavirus outbreak. This has started to put a strain on many countries’ internet infrastructure, which has led to this move by Google.

Heres how you can play Pokemon GO and Harry Potter: Wizards Unite from home

While all of Niantic’s games on smartphones encourage gamers to go outdoors and explore their world, the lockdown imposed upon various countries because of the coronavirus epidemic has made the game developer take a U-turn and introduce features that allow players to stay at home and play Niantic games.

The game developer is behind two popular AR-based gaming titles — Pokemon GO and Harry Potter: Wizards Unite. Both these titles are being adapted to support stay-at-home gaming since it’s no longer safe to venture outside and play these games.

Some of the new features introduced to ensure you stay at home while playing includes the following —

- Niantic’s Adventure Sync function will now track indoor steps like running on a treadmill, cleaning the house or making other indoor movements. - Niantic games will encourage in-game virtual meetups and let players stay in touch without having to meet in real life. - You can soon be able to team up with friends and take on raid battles in Pokemon GO from your home. - Apart from that, Niantic is also reimagining live events (remember the Pokemon GO Fest which ended in a disaster?) to let players feel the excitement from their homes. More details will be revealed about this in the coming weeks. - Lastly, Niantic is encouraging people to virtually visit and share their memories of their favourite real-world places until they can go and visit them in person.

What's new in Pokemon GO?

That’s not all. Pokemon GO has received a bunch of new features that shouldn’t encourage you to head outdoors. That includes a new form of gameplay called Go Battle which can be played from anywhere in the world without having to go outdoors. Walking requirements have been reduced from 3KM to zero. There are deeply discounted incense and Poke Balls to let people catch more of them without travelling too far. Niantic has also increased storage to let people send and receive more gifts.

What's new in Harry Potter: Wizards Unite?

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite has not been left alone either. You will now see more content around you on the map. So expect more Spell Energy, rare potions ingredients and other iconic Harry Potter content near you to help you make progress. Potion tuning has also been adjusted to have Foundables spawn directly at their house. Gifts will offer more helpful resources and you can open more gifts each day.

Redmi 9 New Color Options Revealed in New Live Shots, Here’s What We Know So Far

It’s not been too long since the launch of Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 9 series devices that currently consists of the Redmi Note 9 Pro and the Note 9 Pro Max here in India. There is another device called the Redmi Note 9S, which was later found to be a rebranded version of the Redmi Note 9 Pro for specific markets. With these successful launches under its belt, Redmi seems to be now turning its attention to the budget segment where it plans to launch a new handset called the Redmi 9 soon. While we still not have complete information about the Redmi 9, Indian leakster Sudhanshu Ambhore recently posted an image of what is claimed to be the soon to be launched Redmi 9.

A few days later, the Redmi was back in the news after another leakster Xiaomishka posted images of what he claimed was the upcoming Redmi 9 in as many as three color options. While the leakster contended that the photos are of the new Redmi 9, several replies to his post pointed out that the rear camera setup of the handset looked strikingly similar to that of the Redmi Note 8 Pro from last year. That being said, if we are to believe Xiaomiska’s claim, the Redmi 9, as of now, exists in three color options: Green, Red, and Black.

The handset appears to feature a quad-camera setup at the rear with the lenses stacked vertically. The handset also gets a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner.  Coming back to the camera, current rumors point towards the possibility of the phone featuring a 13MP primary camera, an 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera, a 5-megapixel macro camera, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor.

The Redmi 9 could come powered by the MediaTek Helio G80 SoC and could also feature a 5,000 mAh battery with support for 18W fast charging. As of now, expectations are that the Redmi 9 could be officially announced sometime in April. The ongoing COVID-10 pandemic could, however, affect the launch timeline if this handset.

Google no longer sells the Pixel 3 or 3 XL

Google's online Store no longer carries the Google Pixel 3 or Pixel 3 XL. A Google spokesperson has confirmed to Android Police that Google has ceased sales of the third-generation Pixel smartphone. The Google Store still sells the Pixel 3a, Pixel 3a XL, Pixel 4, and Pixel 4 XL. Even if you managed to find the landing page for the Pixel 3, which isn't accessible from the Google Store navigator, all storage sizes and carrier configurations are out of stock. Last year, the Pixel 2 and 2 XL ran out of stock at the Google Store in early April, so the timing is about right. The Google...

Honor Play 9A with 5000mAh Battery, MediaTek Helio P35 SoC Launched in China: Price, Features

Alongside the Honor 30S smartphone, Huawei’s sub-brand Honor also unveiled its budget Honor Play 9A smartphone on March 30, 2020. The Honor Play 9A is an entry-level smartphone and it comes with decent specifications like a 5,000mAh battery, a dual rear camera, and a physical fingerprint scanner. While the international availability of the Honor Play 9A has not yet been announced, the device is already available in China for pre-order. Take a look at the price, availability, specifications, and features of the newly launched Honor Play 9A and find out what it has in store for us.

Honor Play 9A: Price and Availability

As mentioned earlier, the Honor Play 9A is currently available for pre-order in China via vmall.com. The company has introduced two memory variants of the device – the 64GB variant is priced at CNY 900 (somewhere around $125) and the 128GB will cost you CNY 1,199. Both memory variants are available in three color schemes – Blue Emerald, Jasper Green, and Night Black. The international availability of the Honor Play 9A is unknown for now.

Honor Play 9A: Specifications and Features

Starting with the display of the device, the Honor Play 9A features a 6.3-inch HD+ LCD panel with a 720p+ resolution and a 20:9 aspect ratio. The Honor Play 9A features a waterdrop notch at the top of the display, which makes room for the selfie camera of the device. The selfie camera is an 8MP unit and can capture 1080 pixel videos. Moving around on the rear of the device, the Honor Play 9A features a dual camera setup, which includes a 13MP primary camera with f/1.8 aperture and a 2MP depth sensor for portrait images. The rear camera can also shoot videos with 1080 pixel resolution. Furthermore, the Honor Play 9A has a physical rear-mounted fingerprint scanner.

Under the hood, the Honor Play 9A is powered by a MediaTek Helio P35 processor (which has eight Cortex-A53 CPU cores and a PowerVR GE8320 GPU). The processor is assisted by 4GB of RAM and up to 128GB of onboard storage. If 128GB of storage does not suffice for your media consumption needs, the same can be topped up all the way up to 512GB with the help of an external SD card.

In the software department, the Honor Play 9A runs on the latest Android 10 OS out of the box with the company’s Magic UI 3.0.1 skin baked on top of it. As far as the battery of the device is concerned, the Honor Play 9A is fueled by a large 5,000mAh battery, which has provision for 10W charging. Sadly, there is no fast charging support for the Honor Play 9A. There is no USB Type-C charging port either and the Honor Play 9A relies on the dated microUSB port instead. Thankfully enough, there is at least a 3.5mm headphone jack. The Honor Play 9A features Huawei’s Histen 6.0 audio technology and promises 88dB of music.

Motorola Edge+ Moniker Confirmed by Bluetooth SIG, Launch Seems Imminent

For a while now, we have been hearing about smartphone major Motorola working on two new handsets called the Motorola Edge and the Motorola Edge+. Both these handsets appear to be Motorola’s biggest release since the launch of the Motorola RAZR foldable smartphone in several countries across the globe. As you might have guessed by now, both the Edge series handset derive their name from the curved, waterfall style displays that ‘fall’ towards the sides of the phone.

Until now, we did not have any indication that Motorola would actually call these handsets the Motorola Edge and the Motorola Edge+ since the company continued to maintain a stoic silence over the existence of these phones. However, the Motorola Edge+ recently made an appearance on the Bluetooth SIG website for certification. As per the certification document, the phone appears to have the model number XT2061-1. However, in the ‘product name’ column, the handset is referred to as the Motorola Edge+. This is the first-ever ‘official’ document that confirms the Motorola Edge/ Motorola Edge+ moniker for these upcoming handsets.

Motorola Edge+ Bluetooth SIG
The Motorola Edge+ on the Bluetooth SIG website

The Motorola Edge series has been in the news for a while now, and there were reports about Motorola reportedly planning to release these handsets during the now canceled MWC 2020. The ongoing coronavirus pandemic, however, has undoubtedly affected this launch timeline, and by the looks of it, it would still take Motorola a while to officially launch these handsets.

The Motorola Edge+ is the more premium (and pricier) of the two, and as per current rumors, it will be a proper flagship-class device. It is expected to feature the Snapdragon 865 SoC from Qualcomm with support for 5G networks as well. The display on the Motorola Edge+ is said to measure 6.67-inches across and is most likely an AMOLED panel that supports 90Hz refresh rate. It is also expected to feature a 108MP primary rear-facing camera. Previously leaked images also suggest that the phone will get a punch hole on tp[ right corner of the display.

As for the Motorola Edge, this is expected to be a lower-priced variant with (obviously) lower specs. Current rumors talk about the possibility of the Motorola Edge featuring the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G SoC. This mid-ranger is expected to also feature a triple rear camera setup that includes a 64MP primary camera, a 16MP wide-angle camera, and an 8MP telephoto camera.

Possible OPPO A/K Series Smartphone with 5G Connectivity, 18W Charger Spotted on 3C

OPPO is reportedly working on launching its OPPO Ace 2 smartphone in April 2020. The device was recently spotted on the Chinese 3C certification website, which gave us almost all the key details about it, including its specifications and live shots. Today, we have been able to spot a new OPPO smartphone on the Chinese 3C certification website, which could very well belong to the OPPO A or K lineup of smartphones. As a matter of fact, the OPPO PDKM00 could be the first-ever 5G smartphone in the OPPO A or the OPPO K series of smartphones if it indeed belongs to one of those. Take a look at what the 3C certification for the OPPO PDKM00 has revealed about the device.

OPPO PDKM00 5G with 18W Fast Charging Spotted on 3C

oppo a or k series smartphone 5g

As seen in the 3C certification image for the device, the OPPO PKDM00 will be a 5G handset and will support up to 18W (9VDC, 2A) of fast charging. Other than these two pointers, the 3C certification fails to provide us with any more intel on the OPPO PKDM00.

That being said, the rumor mill has already started doing its job. Digital Chat Station, a Chinese leakster with a pretty decent track record when it comes to providing leaks, has speculated the OPPO PKDM00 to be either an OPPO A series or an OPPO K series smartphone. Furthermore, the leakster has speculated that the OPPO PKDM00 could come with a punch-hole display for the selfie shooter and a ‘rear matrix camera’ at the back. The OPPO PKDM00 is also being speculated to come with a ‘very mature design’. While we are not entirely sure as to what kind of mature design the leaker is hinting at, we can expect the OPPO PKDM00 to come with a gradient finish back at the very least.

The processor to be used in the OPPO PKDM00 is also unknown as of now, but given the fact that the OPPO PKDM00 is a 5G handset, it will most likely be powered by a mid-range 5G mobile platform. Expecting a Snapdragon 865 processor will be too much, considering that the 18W fast charging resonates with more of a mid-range smartphone only. Lastly, we can expect that the OPPO PKDM00 will run on the latest Android 10 OS out of the box.

Whenever we do, we shall make it a point to inform you of the same. Meanwhile, the OPPO Ace 2 smartphone is launching soon. In case you are curious to learn more about that, you can head to our previous coverage for the same.
