Watchout Netflix, Disney+ launching in India via Hotstar on April 3

Disney+ was originally set to launch in India via Hotstar on March 29 but is now officially launching on April 3. The information comes from Hotstar's Twitter account. The Tweet reads, “This is not a drill! The biggest Super Heroes, magical stories for everyone, exclusive Disney+ Originals and all that you've been waiting for are (finally) landing on Disney+ Hotstar. 3rd April. Really.” According to TechCrunch, the subscription fee for the service will go up from Rs 999 per annum to Rs 1499 per annum. Hopefully, we will get to see a bump in the streaming quality as well, but that is something we will know when the service is publicly available.

TechCrunch goes on to say that there is a more affordable plan priced at Rs 399. This plan will include movies from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) along with live sporting events and a catalogue of movies and shows along with Hotstar originals. The 399 plan will not include Disney+ Originals. The Rs 1499 plan, however, will offer customers content from partners including HBO, Fox, and Showtime. So if you are one that likes watching shows like Game of Thrones, True Detective and more, then the Rs 1499 plan is the one for you to consider.

Disney+ Hotstar was expected to launch in India on March 29, but it looks like this was delayed due to the Coronavirus outbreak. We still aren't sure about whether the service will finally start streaming in 4K and HDR or whether it will give users the option of profiles or increase the number of simultaneous streams. We will get you the answers to all these questions soon.

In the meantime, know that the Amazon Prime subscription costs Rs 999 per annum, giving you access to Prime Videos, Prime Music and Even Prime Delivery. Netflix has a bunch of plans ranging from the mobile-only Rs 199 per month plan all the way up to Rs 799 per month, giving you access to 4 simultaneous playbacks and quality up to 4K and HDR. You can read more about Netflix’s subscriptions here.

Disney Plus India Launch Date Set for April 3, Annual Subscription Price for Disney+ Hotstar Increased to Rs 1,499

Disney’s much-awaited Disney Plus streaming service will go live for India starting April 3, according to a press note issued by Disney India. The India-launch of Disney Plus comes just days after the service went live in seven European countries (the UK, Ireland, Germany, Italy, Spain, Austria, and Switzerland) simultaneously. Disney seemed to have decided to go ahead with the launch even as most of the word continues to reel under the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. On the flip side, with people spending more time at home, this might just be the perfect time for a launch for a new streaming service.

In India, Disney already owns and operates the popular streaming service Hotstar, and by the looks of it, the Disney Plus service shall be offered as an additional bouquet. Currently, the premium subscription to Hotstar costs ₹999 per year. With the addition of offerings from Disney, the price of this combined bouquet will go up to ₹1400 per year. At this time, there is no word if the package will be available without the Disney content at the existing price tag of ₹999.

Hotstar currently claims to have a userbase of more than 300 million monthly active users in India. The service generally sees a massive traffic spike during the March-May period during the IPL series. The 2020 tournament, however, seems to have been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing lockdown in India. This will almost certainly result in a reduction in the number of viewers for Hotstar this year.

Apart from the all-in-one plan that costs ₹999, Hotstar also has an affordable plan that currently costs ₹365 a year. The company is expected to increase the price of this service as well, with the price going up to ₹399 per year. Users with the premium subscription will be able to enjoy over 100 series and 250 superhero and animated titles, including Disney+ Originals and shows from HBO, Fox, and Showtime.

Disney has announced that all its existing subscribers will be automatically upgraded to the new subscription plans. They will, however, be required to pay the new rates upon renewal.

[Breaking] Xiaomi, OPPO Announce 5% Price Hike on Various Smartphone Models Owing to GST Rate Revision

Two weeks ago, following the 39th GST Council meeting on March 14, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced that the Government of India has decided to increase the GST rate on mobile phones and specified parts. Back then, the government confirmed that the new GST rates would applicable starting April 1, 2020. This decision by the GST Council meant that all mobile phones that attracted a 12% GST fee until now found themselves in the higher 18% GST slab.

With April 1, already here, and the government ignoring all pleas by the manufacturers to roll-back the GST hike, several companies are left with no option but to announce a marginal increase in the prices of their smartphones.  Among the first companies to have taken the decision to increase the prices of their smartphones include Xiaomi and OPPO.

Xiaomi, India’s largest smartphone brand, released an official statement shared across its social media platforms in which the company explained the circumstances in which they are forced to increase the prices of their handsets marginally. According to the statement, Xiaomi is left with no choice other than hiking the prices of their products with the new GST rates in place effective today. The company also cited the continuous depreciation of the Indian rupee against the US dollar as one of the reasons they have to hike the prices on their products. As of writing this story, the increased prices are not live on the company website.

Another company that has announced a hike in the prices of their products is OPPO. Unlike Xiaomi, however, the company is yet to make an official announcement. However, the company seems to have already intimated dealers and partners across the country about its plan to increase the prices of some of its handsets. Manish Khatri of Mahesh Telecom, a major smartphone retailer from Mumbai, recently announces the changes in the MOP of some OPPO handsets in a tweet sent out yesterday.

As evident from the tweet, the OPPO handsets affected by the price hike include the like of the OPPO Reno3 Pro and the OPPO F15 — both of which were launched just a few weeks ago. Other OPPO handsets that will see prices go up marginally include the OPPO A1k, OPPO A5s, OPPO K1, the OPPO A9, and OPPO Reno2 series.

Following the announcement to increase the GST rate on smartphones, several smartphone brands had appealed to the government to roll back the decision. However, at least for the time being, the Narendra Modi led government appears to be in no mood to relent. We expect more smartphone brands to announce similar price hikes and will update the article with more details as and when we get them.

YouTube streaming limited to 480p in India by Google

As the world grapples with social distancing, and India goes into what feels like its nth day of lockdown, YouTube has announced that they’re going to be changing the playback quality of the video playback to standard definition (SD) or more commonly known as 480p. The decision comes after Google observed a major uptake in the number of people streaming YouTube videos throughout the day.

The move comes in the wake of the fact that more people are now stuck at home, whether working or not and hence, streaming more content as a means of passing the time. Across Europe, all streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime had reduced the default streaming quality as the infrastructure came under heavy load. Google says that the kind of uptake in traffic they’re seeing on YouTube “won't break the internet,” but the company is limiting the stream quality anyway to reduce the strain on ISP and telcos.

In India, YouTube streaming has been capped at 480p, but only for mobile devices. Even if you’re connected to a home Wi-Fi network, your mobile device will not stream YouTube content in quality higher than 480p. This is strange because you can stream YouTube content in up to 4K (content willing) if you’re on a computer. In fact, if you choose to forego the YouTube app and use the browser on your phone instead, you can get a slightly higher quality stream at 720p.

According to a report by Bloomberg, there’s been a steady rise of 20 percent in online streaming since the Coronavirus outbreak. This has started to put a strain on many countries’ internet infrastructure, which has led to this move by Google.

Heres how you can play Pokemon GO and Harry Potter: Wizards Unite from home

While all of Niantic’s games on smartphones encourage gamers to go outdoors and explore their world, the lockdown imposed upon various countries because of the coronavirus epidemic has made the game developer take a U-turn and introduce features that allow players to stay at home and play Niantic games.

The game developer is behind two popular AR-based gaming titles — Pokemon GO and Harry Potter: Wizards Unite. Both these titles are being adapted to support stay-at-home gaming since it’s no longer safe to venture outside and play these games.

Some of the new features introduced to ensure you stay at home while playing includes the following —

- Niantic’s Adventure Sync function will now track indoor steps like running on a treadmill, cleaning the house or making other indoor movements. - Niantic games will encourage in-game virtual meetups and let players stay in touch without having to meet in real life. - You can soon be able to team up with friends and take on raid battles in Pokemon GO from your home. - Apart from that, Niantic is also reimagining live events (remember the Pokemon GO Fest which ended in a disaster?) to let players feel the excitement from their homes. More details will be revealed about this in the coming weeks. - Lastly, Niantic is encouraging people to virtually visit and share their memories of their favourite real-world places until they can go and visit them in person.

What's new in Pokemon GO?

That’s not all. Pokemon GO has received a bunch of new features that shouldn’t encourage you to head outdoors. That includes a new form of gameplay called Go Battle which can be played from anywhere in the world without having to go outdoors. Walking requirements have been reduced from 3KM to zero. There are deeply discounted incense and Poke Balls to let people catch more of them without travelling too far. Niantic has also increased storage to let people send and receive more gifts.

What's new in Harry Potter: Wizards Unite?

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite has not been left alone either. You will now see more content around you on the map. So expect more Spell Energy, rare potions ingredients and other iconic Harry Potter content near you to help you make progress. Potion tuning has also been adjusted to have Foundables spawn directly at their house. Gifts will offer more helpful resources and you can open more gifts each day.
