Sony PS5 could have support for 1440p (QHD) resolution after all, according to BenQ

While we talk about the jump from 1080p to 4K with consoles, 1440p has mostly gone ignored. Microsoft enabled 1440p support in the Xbox One consoles a few years ago, but PlayStation still doesn’t have it. Fans have been asking for 1440p support on PlayStation for a while now, and it looks like we might be getting it on the PS5 soon, according to BenQ.

An article posted to the BenQ website’s knowledge centre has the following passage suggesting QHD aka 1440p resolution support:

“While there’s a lot of talk of 120Hz with regard to the new consoles and late 2020 graphics cards, let’s be realistic. Most of it doesn’t apply to 4K, but more to 1080p or 1440p. It’ll be another generation before 120 frames per second in 4K are normative for the majority of games. We expect the PS5 (and by extension, most PC titles) to deliver firm 4K 60Hz for the next few years. If you’re interested in high frame rates, you may want to consider a good QHD gaming monitor, as 1440p will be supported by the PS5 with a higher likelihood of 120Hz in that resolution.”

It seems like BenQ went out on an assumption here. Either that, or it had some sort of intimation with regards to the support, which was not confirmed.

The line mentioning the possible support for 1440p on the PS5 has since then been redacted entirely. However, it’s still likely that Sony will enable 1440p resolution. While the console is aiming for 4K, and 120 FPS, getting both together seems unlikely for all titles. In that case, the PS5 will need a middle ground, which could be 1440p 120 Hz.

Console gaming mostly ignored the resolution since TVs directly jumped from 1080p to 4K. 1440p was more of a computer monitor resolution. However, now with Xbox Series S aiming for 1440p gaming, and Series X and PS5 looking for 120 FPS, consoles are going to be giving some love to 1440p.

This could end up being another feature the PS5 gets, along with a possible rival to Xbox’s Auto HDR. In any case, we’ll know when the PS5 launches in a couple of weeks from now, so stay tuned!
