The Indian Army has developed an indigenous app called SAI, which stands for Secure Application for Internet. The new app launched by the Indian Army comes after the call of an “Atmanirbhar Bharat”, which translates to self-reliant India. The Indian Army will use SAI for secure voice, text and video calling services. SAI is very similar to other messaging applications like WhatsApp, Telegram, Hike, etc., that are commercially available for download. The new app launched by the Indian Army also supports end-to-end encryption like most of the popular apps out there, according to news agency Asian News International (ANI).

SAI is aimed at offering a secure messaging service to the Indian Army soldiers. The Made in India messaging app is currently available only on Android and is said to be available soon on iOS. SAI also offers secure voice, text & video calling services.

Data will be securely stored at the local servers and the coding can also be tweaked as per requirements.
As per a statement released the Indian Army, the messaging app has been vetted by CERT-in empanelled auditor and Army Cyber Group, and the process for filing Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) hosting the infrastructure on NIC is in progress. The developers are also working on making SAI available on the iOS platform for Apple iPhones.
The launch of SAI comes after PM Narendra Modi’s nationwide call for an “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (self-reliant India) to reduce dependencies on foreign goods and services and also boost manufacturing and production within the country.
With data localisation and secure end-to-end encryption, SAI also fulfils various security standards required for Indian Army soldiers to use the messaging applications.
The Army has banned the use of applications like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, PUBG Mobile, and several other applications over safety and security concerns. The list of 89 apps banned by the Indian Army also included apps like Truecaller, Zoom, Snapchat, etc.
The order was also issued to avoid any leak of sensitive information that could be a threat to national security.
