Xiaomi has seen steady growth ever since its inception, but for the longest time, its growth as a smartphone brand was largely based on its shipments in India and China, the latter being its home turf. Now, for the first time ever, Xiaomi’s smartphone shipment numbers appear to have a clear reflection of its growing stature in global markets. Smartphone market shipment data from research firms such as IDC, Counterpoint and Canalys, while varying slightly, have all largely reflected massive, double-digit growth for Xiaomi in its global smartphone shipments, and this has seen it not only overtake Apple, but almost topple fellow Chinese manufacturer Huawei in the global smartphone shipment charts.
According to data from Canalys, Xiaomi grew from shipping 32.5 million smartphones in the July-September quarter of 2019 to 47.1 million devices in the same quarter this year. This marks a 45 percent growth in Xiaomi’s shipments, leaving it with a 13.5 percent market share right now, and just 4.6 million units short of Huawei’s numbers. In comparison, Apple, which seemingly fell to the fourth spot despite strong iPhone 11 sales, shipped 43.2 million devices in the same quarter. While its overall market share still increased marginally to 12.4 percent, its overall shipments fell by 1 percent since the past year.
Counterpoint Research’s data more or less mirrors Canalys. Here, Xiaomi is said to have shipped 46.2 million devices to hold 13 percent market share right now, while Apple shipped 41.7 million units to hold 11 percent of the market. For Xiaomi, this represents a 46 percent growth, while for Apple, it represents a 7 percent annual decline. Figures from IDC state that Xiaomi shipped 46.5 million units to hold 13.1 percent of the market, while Apple shipped 41.6 million units to hold 11.8 percent. For Xiaomi, it was a 42 percent growth, while for Apple, it was a 10.6 percent decline over the past year.
Despite the slight disparities in numbers, the recurring theme is clear – Xiaomi is clearly making a move on global smartphone markets. Its recent flagship smartphone launch, with the Mi 10T, was held in Europe, showing clear signs of intent towards moving beyond its major markets in India and China. In fact, while Xiaomi shipped less than half the devices that Huawei shipped in Q3 2019, it now stands at roughly 4.5 million devices (less than 2 percent) behind Huawei’s global shipment numbers.
Apple, on the other hand, has seen strong responses to its recently launched iPhone 12 lineup of smartphones. As a result, it will be interesting to see if Apple can use its newly launched iPhones to climb back up to third in the smartphone shipments chart over the next few quarters.
