Telegram Now Lets You Export Chats From WhatsApp, Line, And Other Messaging Platforms: Here’s How

Telegram has introduced a new feature that allows users to import chats from other apps, including WhatsApp. The feature is evidently an effort at capitalising on the app’s newfound popularity after WhatsApp’s new privacy policy was announced earlier this month. While many users have called for a boycott of WhatsApp, moving from the app has been an issue. Importing chats from WhatsApp to Telegram is one of the problems that users had cited via social media. With this feature, they will be able to pick up where they left off when abandoning WhatsApp for Telegram.

How to import chats from WhatsApp to Telegram

Importing chats from WhatsApp is easy enough. The feature is available for both Android and iOS smartphones. The methods differ just slightly.

  • On iOS, you open a Contact or Group info page for a particular chat on WhatsApp. Here you will find the option to ‘export chat’. Tapping on this created a zip file, which can be imported to Telegram.
  • Once you tap on ‘export chat’, it will bring up the share menu. Choose Telegram here.
  • On Android, you tap the three dot menu on the top right of a chat, tap on the ‘more’ option and then click on ‘export chat’. Share the chat to Telegram when the share menu pops up.

Other new features of Telegram

Exporting chat history from WhatsApp or another instant messaging app to Telegram was one of many features the company announced yesterday. The new features also include the ability to delete groups, secret chats and call history for all users. The company has also added volume controls for voice chat, a feature that’s quite popular amongst WhatsApp users.

Further, you can now report channels and groups that may be fake or could be used to spread misinformation. Telegram is widely used for pirating content and this feature may end up affecting those channels.

Android users will also get better animations in the app, which will show while playing music, downloading files or loading chats.

The instant messaging app has been in existence for a while now, but Telegram gained popularity in India in January this year, thanks to WhatsApp’s new terms and conditions. The company has received over 10 million downloads in less than three weeks from India alone, with many users moving to it worldwide as well.
