Messaging behemoth WhatsApp is adding an extra layer of security to its WhatsApp Web and desktop versions for users who often link their WhatsApp account to computers. Now onwards, you will require to have a biometric authentication on WhatsApp Web before the QR code scanning process. WhatsApp has already started rolling out this feature in phases starting from today for a fewer number of users initially.
WhatsApp Web Gets Biometric Authentication Feature
“This will limit the chance that a housemate or officemate (when we have those again) can link devices to your WhatsApp account without you. This builds on our existing security measures today, which pop up a notice in your phone whenever a Web/Desktop login occurs, and the ability to unlink devices from your phone at any time,” said WhatsApp in a statement. As per the messaging platform, the facial and fingerprint authentication will be stored in the device, and WhatsApp will not be able to access the biometric information stored by the device’s operating system.
This extra layer of security indeed will help users, in case any other person starts linking the smartphone to the Web version without the users knowledge. The process of getting started with biometric authentication is as easy scanning the QR code.
Here’s how you can access biometric authentication when it rolls out to your device:
- Head over to the WhatsApp on your smartphone, and tap on the settings icon > WhatsApp Web.
- You will need to hit the plus icon and follow the instructions if your device support biometric authentication.
- Select the “keep me signed in” option on the QR code page on your laptop if you want to stay logged in, and scan the QR code.
As mentioned above, only selected users are getting this new feature for the time being. WhatsApp mentions that the redesign of WhatsApp Web version, and this new biometric authentication feature will be rolled out to all users in the upcoming few weeks. If you have already received this new feature, do let us know in the comments section below.
