iPhone 13 Pro ProMotion 120Hz Refresh Rate Won’t Work With Third Party Apps, Fix Coming

Apple launched the iPhone 13 series earlier this month. The new iPhone 13 models are already available for purchase in India. The new iPhone models come with a bunch of incremental upgrades over the outgoing models, especially in the camera and battery departments. The Pro models got an exclusive feature this year, which is the introduction of a ProMotion display. Apple finally introduced the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max models with a dynamic 120Hz OLED display. The premium variants of the iPhone 13 series switch between 10Hz and 120Hz depending on the on-screen content. While the feature is supposed to make the user experience better, it looks like not all apps can take advantage of the butter-smooth refresh rate tech.

According to a 9to5Mac report, the Pro models do not support a 120Hz refresh rate for third-party apps. Developers found that under certain circumstances, their apps can run only at 60Hz, which is similar to the regular iPhone 13 and 13 mini.

While iOS 15 allows users to take advantage of the ProMotion tech while scrolling through social media, it caps other animations at 60Hz for third-party applications. This includes special effects and animations for custom components. Surprisingly, this isn’t applicable on the iPad Pro, which also supports ProMotion.

Apple later announced that it is working on a fix. It said that developers will need to add a new Info.plist key to opt-in, and documentation is coming soon. The upcoming software update is also said to fix a bug where animations were not able to reach a 120Hz refresh rate. There is no word on when this particular update will be rolled out.

The new iPhone 13 Pro models come with a 6.1-inch and a 6.7-inch display. They feature a 20 per cent smaller notch and come with a powerful A15 chip that has a 5-core GPU. The Pro phones also feature a triple-camera setup on the back. For more details, click here.
