From MacBook Air to iPad Pro 2018, Here’s the Wrap-up of Apple Announcements at Special Event in October

At its dedicated launch event yesterday, Apple took the wraps off the long overdue new generation MacBook Air and Mac Mini. In addition to that, the company unveiled the new iPad Pro which is powerful enough to take on the laptops on the market. All the new products are eco-friendly as the recycled aluminum they are made from will significantly reduce their carbon footprint. Here are the key highlights of the event:

Finally A New MacBook Air

The refreshed MacBook Air has received a specifications bump and design overhaul that is in line with what made the device so popular in the first place- portability and a decent amount of firepower. The ultra-light laptop is underpinned by an 8th-gen Intel Core i5 processor and the maxed out variant has 16GB of RAM and up to a 1.5TB SSD. It also has Apple’s T2 security chip, which will prevent hackers from spying on you.

It sports a 13.3-inch retina display and it is less voluminous and less bulky than the already slim 2013 MacBook Air. For connectivity, it has two Thunderbolt 3 ports and also has a larger trackpad, Apple’s latest keyboard, Touch ID and Siri. The MacBook Air starts at Rs. 88,528 and goes up to Rs. 103,295. It is available in the colors silver, gold, and space gray. Pre-orders are now open, with shipments starting on November 7.

Mac Mini Gets the Upgrade

The new Mac Mini offers up to five times the performance of its predecessor. It is highly customizable, which means you can choose from quad-core and 6-core 8th-generation Intel Core CPUs, 8 to 64GB of RAM, and 128GB to 2TB of storage.

For connectivity, the Mac Mini has a lot of ports, including 4 Thunderbolt 3 ports, an HDMI 2.0 port, two USB-A ports, and an upgradable ethernet port. Apple’s T2 security chip is also a part of the package. Design-wise, it is a lot like its predecessor with an added color option by the name of space gray.

The Mac Mini starts at Rs. 59,000 and going all out on specifications will set you back Rs.  310,149. It can now be pre-ordered on Apple’s website for a November 7 shipment.

iPad Pro 2018 Makes A Debut

Featuring the new A12X Bionic chip with a Neural Engine, an 8-core CPU, and a 7-core GPU, the new iPad Pro is powerful enough to duke it out with hybrid PCs and less powerful laptops on the market. The new generation tablet is available in 11-inch and 12.9-inch models, and Apple has not discontinued the previous 10.5-inch model.

The proprietary Lightning connector has been replaced by a new USB-C port and the 3.5mm headphone jack has been ditched. The Home button is gone, as navigation would be gesture-based now and the new iPad Pro also features Face ID. There is a 7MP camera on the front and a 12MP camera on the back that can also shoot 4K video at 60fps.

Accessories include the second generation magnetic Apple Pencil which charges wirelessly, and the new Smart Keyboard Folio that can improve the typing experience. Additionally, you can use the new tablet to charge your iPhone, thanks to reverse charging. The iPad Pro starts at Rs. 59,000, and pre-orders are now open.

Operating System Updates

Apple also released the first update to the iOS 12, introducing features such as dual-SIM activation for the iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max, new emoji support, and Group FaceTime. You can download it as an OTA update. Apart from that, tvOS 12.1, and macOS 10.14.1 were also released.
